i've noticed that some laptops have 256k max colors. this seems quite peculiar. my desktop runs at 32bit by default. if i recall correctly 'true color' was 24bit and was around 16million colors, and 16bit is around 60,000 some colors. i can't remember what 16bit looked like. do all laptop screens run at this 256k and i just never noticed it before? will i notice a differnece using typical windows apps and watching movies?

all of my lcd's run at 32-bit color.

    16-bit color is 65536 colors.

it's not usually a limitation of the panel, but moreso a limitation with the craptastic video card.

    All up in your interwebsnet.
Do you have the proper drivers for your video card installed? If not then by default windows will only allow 256 or 16 colors.

well, 256 colors is 8bit. 65536 colors is 16bit. 262144 is a LOT more than 65536... so maybe it's 24-bit? But its WAY more than 16 bit. Dunno anyone that can even tell the diff between 16 and 32...

i'm just wondering because i'm looking into that laptop, and noticed that on the spec sheet.

at first it made me think back to the old 256 color days, or when windows drivers don't install for an odd card properly and you get the hideous 480xwhatever 256 colors. but then realized it was 256k, there doesn't seem to be much around about that. i was just concerned it would make videos/pictures have poor quality. but apparently it won't be enough to notice.

    2^18 = 262,144 = 18bit color.

It's exponential (not a linear relationship).

Technically 32 bit should be 4,294,967,296 but generally they don't really consider there to be that many distinct colors so they just fill the tones of each color out a lot more.

A lot of LCD manufacturers get their screens to emulate the full color spectrum so what the computer says its outputting isn't necessarily what the screen is capable of. For the most part you'll hardly notice missing colors unless you're doing dedicated graphics work when your palette looks strangely uniform.
