I have this dell inspiron 8200 that I got for free, but somethings fucked up with it. I booted ubuntu off of the cd drive, but when I tried to install it to the HDD it won't boot up. The only thing I can think of is that the hard drive is the part thats fucked up. I ran perfectly when I booted off cd, so I dunno what else it could be. Are there any bootable HDD testers that I could use? Anything else it could be?

Well you could try putting (just for trial purposes) windows on it, if that runs fine then it isn't a hard disk problem. Its really not an unknown feature that some linux based OS have a hard time installing , it might therefore be the procedure in how you installed it which was not confirm on how it should be done. This because the user friendlyness of those kind of OS often have a lot that's left to be desired from them. I don't know if you accept that but that's honestly what i experienced from them, so just my 2 cents on it.

Windows "fucked up?" Does that mean it would not boot?

Do the seagate tools run on any brand of HDD, or only Seagate? I know that the IBM DFT will run on all brands, but didn't know about the seagate ones.

actually, the best way is to get a hold of a copy of spinrite.
it will tell you your drive's health better than seagate tools will
