Not for me. I use dell's at work and they have been great but I'd like to try to recommend a couple of different options to my brother for him to look over.

I know IBMs are good, not sure about anything else. Throw out some specs and proces or even better some links.

He just surfs, maybe burns a dvd/cd or two. Nothing intensive like graphic work (vidoe/pics).

Just needs to have Vista, 1GB RAM (maybe 2 since it's vista) and ~100GB hard drive, DVD burner and wireless.

ThinkPad's are good, Lenovo's aren't. If you could get a high-end ThinkPad, then you would be golden. Preferably a T Series

Lenovos are good. They are definitely better than any shitty dell, toshiba, sony, hp, etc.

ThinkPad is the best, for sure.

I thought lenovo's were pretty good? :dunno:

T61 looks to be $961. It meets most of his specs but the hard drive is a little smaller and the screen is 14.1 vs. the dell's 15.4. I'll pass along the info.

    Anything else?

Look into the new Dell Vostro. They have a solid build, you can get them set up with really good parts for a decent price. They are solid black, so they look "professional" unlike the Inspirons.

And whatever you do, DO NOT buy RAM from the company building the notebook, they will charge way to much. Most charge $200+ for 2GBs of RAM, you can get it on Newegg for less than $80. The only time you buy RAM from them is if it's on sale (for instance, a while back Dell was giving a free upgrade to 2GBs)

The dell vostro is all marketing hype. It is the same bullshit crap as the Latitude.

Look at the ThinkPad hinges. Those scream QUALITY like no other.

We've used latitudes at work for about 5 or 6 years so if the vostros are like them then they must be decent.
Obviously IBM > Dell but dell laptops are far from crap.

had good luck with toshiba's here until recently. We have tested the business class HP's and have been very impressed.
