I bought a laptop yesterday and I've never had one before. I'm about to move and the bedroom has a small built-in desk thing. I will primarily use the laptop there when I move and I'm wondering if these laptop cooling pads are actually beneficial. And is it very harmful to the laptop to be used for long periods of time on a flat surface?

They're very useful if your laptop is running a sustained load on the CPU for long periods of time, but in 90% of real world situations, a clean laptop doesn't need one. Get a can of compressed air and clean the heatsink and fan once a month and you should be fine.

they're worthless. the laptop is DESGINED to be used on a flat surface.

Just put a book under the machine if you're going to use it in bed. Not good to have it on the sheets/pillow because they constrict airflow.

You can get flip-down feet that stick onto the underside of the laptop, if your laptop's design gives it particularly shitty airflow under the case.

this one hasn't gotten as hot in my lap as other laptops i've used so i'm not really worried about it

but my dell desktop has lasted for 5 years so far and i'd love to get a good lifespan out of this. i've upgraded the memory on the desktop twice to keep up but other than that it's still an excellent computer.

for best usage, make sure to put it right on your crotch while using it.

if it says dell on the case, then it's not an excellent computer. i don't care if it has 8 cores.

why do you say that? i've seen it before but for a personal computer for someone who does nothing but internet it's been perfect. never given me any problems whatsoever and it just sits in its dusty, hot cabinet.

actually, the top cd drive doesn't work any more. i forgot about that. its been so long since it worked that i didn't remember.

does that make it a piece of shit?
