Well you guys always give me great advice when I get a build together or when getting something for a freind so here goes again. My sister is graduating H.S. this year and I wanted to get her something special because Ive been a shitty older brother the last couple of years and skipped bdays and xmas when I was in college so I need to get the shut her the hell up gift. Plus I feel bad.

Shes really into gaming and watching HD stuff but she doesnt have a lap top and will need one when she gets to college in the fall. So I decided to get her a decent lap top I was looking at this and it seems ok but its a little steep.

    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9173262&type=product&id=1218044029168

Any recomendations the only real requirements I have are that it has an hd monitor, camera and isnt bulky 14 - 15 inch is fine.

It looks like a pretty good system. I would see if there is a higher-resolution screen available. Other then that, looks good.

Hate to say it but macbook FTW. She can run Windows on it if she wants and the screen is freaking AWESOME in terms of quality watching HD stuff.

if the one you listed is a little steep, how about this. the one i mentioned seems to have slightly lower fsb, cache and slightly lower resolution. maybe a few more things, but the price is a bit lower :eek3:

This is critical to determining the proper laptop for her.

But dude, if it doesn't match her couture, it will totally throw off her chakras, and she'll never use it. We must know what she looks like, or the results could be disastrous.

Your decision proves you know nothing about women. Just send her to Best Buy and let one of the cute Geek Squad chicks outfit her properly.

Get something with a decent resolution if your going to get one at all... I personally can't stand less than 1k pixel height...

    Asus G50VT-X6 ($1,300)
    - P8700 CPU
    - 4GB RAM
    - 320GB 7.2k HDD
    - 15.4" 1680x1050 screen
    - GeForce 9800M GS
    - Vista Home Premium

Though, I would get something with better battery life and less power for class and a desktop at home for her gaming needs...

I'm with dissonance on this one. I saw that laptop a while ago and recommended it to my friend.

A MacBook would be sweet as well if your willing to throw down the money, but they are expensive.

If she's into gaming, why the hell would you recommend an Apple? What's she gonna play on that? The Apple logo puzzle game? Photoshop?

I agree but don't normally bother arguing with Apple lovers. I'm sure they'll say that she can load Windows on there as well for her gaming needs.... :ugh:

and then when the battery dies in a year, or the keys crack, Apple can say that you voided your already very limited warranty by changing operating systems

do they consider boot camping voiding the warranty?

and even if they do you can run xp in virtualbox, thats how I set up my sis when she insisted on getting a mac then got to college and needed to use Access and the real version of Excel

They'll probably say the warranty is only valid when running OSX, so they'll split the cost of the new battery with you.

the laptop i just got last week got a lot cheaper

lenovo sl300 is $500 now and i highly recommend it... c2d, 2gb, 160gb, led backlit, hdmi out, nvidia graphics.. for $500 dollars!

    it's not an ultraportable though.

[edit] if you want a larger screen, get the sl500 or y530[/edit]
