vpn is very simple; if your router supports dd::wrt you don't even need a prog on your computer -- the routers can do it.

    This brings something to mind.

Are there any software-based open-source VPN apps out there? Are any of them worth using?

I setup some software recently for a tow yard here in town, one of their requirements were that they needed to connect from their house over DSL and do some of the accounting on occasion. I used OpenVPN with a simple sever/client setup.

    www.openvpn.org

The config flies I used were from the simple how-to setup. They have a GUI version too . . .

I looked into Hamachi, not too bad but I don't think it did what I wanted, I honestly forget, plus it's closed source and you connect to theri server to setup your 'network', what happens if they go down??

There were other VPN server apps but they were mostly extentions to IIS, they used https links or something, I installed them, looked at them and uninstalled.

I remember setting up FreeS/WAN http://www.freeswan.org/ back in the day. I remember it was a PITA. Not sure the project is even active anymore, since the last news update on their site was 2003

I just saw the OpenVPN software myself, actually. I haven't had a chance to try it out yet.
