LaGrange teen killed in bizarre gun accident

    The Associated Press

    Friday, February 22, 2008

LAGRANGE - Authorities in west Georgia say a teen died in bizarre mishap when a gun hanging on a wall accidentally fired.

Troup County Sheriff Donny Turner said 17-year-old Natorrin Brown of LaGrange was fatally wounded shortly before midnight Tuesday.

Turner said Brown was among a group of people visiting the home of Joseph Keeth, who was showing some of the visitors a gun hanging in his attic.

When Keeth, 27, was showing how the stock of a loaded AK-47 would go in and out a few inches, 'he disturbed the position of the gun,' Turner said. 'When it went back into position, the trigger hit the nail and the gun went off,' hitting Brown, who was standing in the doorway.

The gun fell to the floor, but gunpowder residue indicated it had fired while it was on the wall, Turner said.

To test the accident theory, sheriff's Chief Investigator Charles Nixon unloaded the gun, cocked it and put it back on the wall. He bumped it with his hand and the trigger activated when it slid back into place.

Nixon said he used a string to determine that the gun barrel would have been pointing where the victim stood.

Nixon said he is conferring with the district attorney's office about the possibility of presenting charges to a grand jury.

What a fucking idiot, I hope they hit him with full murder chargers not some negligence crap.

Ya, showing a loaded gun to people is not a smart thing to do.

I have a pet peeve. It involves calling every AK variant, regardless of semi- or auto-capabilities (or caliber for that matter), an AK-47.

I would assume he'd prefer AK variant.

Just doesn't have the same ring to it.

 Leave it to the fucking media. I saw someone post a story about a ".22 assault rifle" not too long ago. It's pathetic.

Sucks about the guy that died but if you're stupid enough to stand in front of a LOADED gun, you probably deserve to hang out with Darwin up there.

no joke. If the guy was dumb enough to stand in front of the muzzle, then the guy moving the rifle isn't entirely to blame. They should look into whether or not the victim was suicidal.

Ok, I have to say that blaming the guy who was shot is a little silly.

The gun was HANGING ON THE WALL and he was standing in a doorway. If you were walking into a room would you notice that a gun on the wall just happened to be pointing at the doorway?

The owner was 100% at fault for having a LOADED gun hanging on his wall.

:werd: loaded gun hanging on the wall with a screw to support it through the trigger guard is not wise, the kid may of not even known what was going on in there.

The gun was actually hanging from the triggerguard?

The douche probably thought he was a badass because he had some Romanian piece of crap and thought it was worthy of displaying on a wall.

wtf, I seriously just can't understand why people are so stupid. Not only that, but why keep a large caliber rifle locked, cocked, and ready to go on a wall you're displaying it on. It's one thing to have a loaded gun in a safe or a cabinet, but another to have a loaded gun on a wall. Something bad was almost guaranteed to happen. If not by him, by somebody else playing around with his guns.

I am not a gun owner...
if I was over a someones house and they had a gun mounted like it was on display I wouldn't give any thought to where I stood.

Part of me is like, 'This is the definition of accident' and leave it go at at that.
But another part of me is like, 'Why would you display a gun that was loaded?????'.

I am leaning towards manslaughter charges.

The kid is 100% responsible, if the gun was hanging on a wall, why would it need to be loaded? Also, putting the nail in front of the trigger was just stupid.
