The trip took a little less than 20 hours from the time we took off from Wisconsin to when we landed in Kuwait. Then we had another 5 hours of bus ride and in-processing briefings. On the way to our tents, we passed a 24-hour Green Been coffee shop, a Taco Bell, and a Burger King. We haven't seen anything like that since we got to Wisconsin, so we're all happy to be here. We stopped in Bangor, Maine, and again in Shannon, Ireland. We got to Maine just after midnight, and had a 2 hour layover. When we got off the plane we were greeted by about 20 local people who shook all of our hands and gave us coffee and donuts and generally wished us well and thanked us for going. That was very nice and humbling, but the real shocker was when we landed in Ireland. It was about 1:30pm when we deplaned, and everyone in the entire airport stopped what they were doing and applauded for what seemed to be a very long time. I will hold that memory close for a long time. cliffs: getting combat pay and NOT being at Ft. McCoy = teh win.
