The trip took a little less than 20 hours from the time we took off from Wisconsin to when we landed in Kuwait. Then we had another 5 hours of bus ride and in-processing briefings. On the way to our tents, we passed a 24-hour Green Been coffee shop, a Taco Bell, and a Burger King. We haven't seen anything like that since we got to Wisconsin, so we're all happy to be here.

We stopped in Bangor, Maine, and again in Shannon, Ireland. We got to Maine just after midnight, and had a 2 hour layover. When we got off the plane we were greeted by about 20 local people who shook all of our hands and gave us coffee and donuts and generally wished us well and thanked us for going. That was very nice and humbling, but the real shocker was when we landed in Ireland. It was about 1:30pm when we deplaned, and everyone in the entire airport stopped what they were doing and applauded for what seemed to be a very long time. I will hold that memory close for a long time.

cliffs: getting combat pay and NOT being at Ft. McCoy = teh win.

My hubby's crew said the same thing about Shannon when they came back from Desert Storm. They had a few unkind words about (I think) the Italians and their rather un-friendly welcome there (of course it might have had something to do with the fact that they were all still fully armed too :mamoru:)

On one of my trips back, I flew threw Shannon and Bangor. We got to Shannon in the middle of the night and everything was closed. They opened up the bar for us and the line was ridiculously long.

Getting into Bangor was a great memory too. The retired community there is awesome. I have never seen anything in all of my deployments like Bangor. The greet you coming into the terminal. There is a phone shop that lets you call home. It was very moving.

I was only in Kuwait for one day. It was hot as fuck. I'm in Baghdad now going through Iron Claw Academy. This is some seriously good shit. Especially the parts where they tell you to put away all pens and paper. :naughty:

That would be cool. But it was hell to get the gif size low enough to make it past OT's av size limit.
