Ok, this is really lame that I have to come on here and do this, but having been ripped-off for almost $4600 from people who claim to be part of the “MMA community,” I feel it’s kind of my duty to let everybody on here know what happened so that hopefully the same thing doesn’t happen twice. So here we go –

In the 5+ years I’ve been in business, I’ve been very fortunate to have had some really great clients. They include: American Kickboxing Academy, Team Quest, Cesar Gracie Academy, the US Army, The Fight Lab, Unlimited Kickboxing, Fight & Fitness, the list goes on…. Not once have any of my clients tried anything funny with me or tried to not pay for the custom products they ordered.

This all changed exactly one year ago when I was contacted by Chris Stolzman, the owner of Knuckle-Up gyms in Atlanta.

Chris was referred to me through a mutual business associate and wanted to get some custom shorts and rash guards made. He ended up ordering 100 shorts and 300 rash guards.

    Here are some pictures –

The way private labeling works is that 50% is put down pre-production as a deposit, and the remaining balance is paid upon delivery.

When Chris received the shorts and rash guards, the first thing he tried to do is say that there was a misprint and that he didn’t want to pay the balance. Chris claimed that the font for, “MMA.com” underneath the knuckle-up logo was the wrong font. Now, the thing is that Chris submitted all of the artwork to me in vector version. For those of you unfamiliar with vector art, it’s basically an image, or a picture. It’s not like a MS-Word document that if you try to open it up on one computer that doesn’t have that particular font, that it will atomically convert to another font. With vector art, the only to way to change or alter it, is to actually go into Illustrator and erase the image and start all over. This certainly wasn’t the case here.

After I was able to prove to Chris that what was printed was exactly what he had sent, he apologized and told me he would be sending payment in 30 days. I accepted the apology, but told him that the balance was already due. He told me that he got 30 days terms from other vendors and had assumed that it was the same situation with me. I told him that ordering custom merchandise isn’t like ordering other products and that I had made it quite clear at least half a dozen times that payment was due upon delivery. In fact, we had confirmed that with each other when he sent me the signed purchase order.

Chris then tells me that he’s short on money and asks if I could give him 30 days to pay. At this point, I was still trying to give this guy the benefit of the doubt, despite all of the warning signs, and I extended him 30 days.

After the 30 days, I called Chris, but then he tells me that he made a lot of bad financial decisions and that he would have to be filing for bankruptcy and that I could basically fuck off.

I didn’t really like the sound of this, so I called the mutual business associate who had introduced Chris to me and asked him to try to resolve this. This person assured me that I would get paid and also assured me that Chris wasn’t going to be filing for bankruptcy. In fact, he told me that Chris had just purchased a new Escalade.

4 months goes by and nothing. Finally, I get a call from Chris’ father, Rick Stolzman. Rick tells me that his son is basically an idiot and that even though Chris has a good business, but doesn’t know how to run it and I’m not the only person who he owes money to. Rick gives me his AMEX and tells me to run $2000 towards the balance (now leaving a balance of $4600) and tells me that he’ll be able to pay the rest in one week. That was back in October ’07.

Since then, I’ve had to get an attorney involved and this going to just become a bigger waste of time and money.

So…my warning is this – if any other gear/apparel company is approached by Stolzman Sr. or Stolzman Jr. or anybody from Knuckle-Up for that matter, please be very cautious with them. If you decide to take the risk of working with these guys, get 110% up front. These guys are thieves and they have attempted to defraud me. I will eventually get my money, but it’s just extremely lame that there are people out there trying to do this.

I have heard alot of shitty things about KU from peole that have trained there. Trainers have ko'd people when just light sparring and they push people to fight before they are ready and sandbag in tournaments to get their name out there

Fuck that Konjo guy! He agreed to sponsor me, sent me a pair of shorts and after i fought was like "no cash".

So a few fights down the line i talk to him again see if he wants to do a deal he tells me "you already got shorts what else do you want?" Like a pair of his shorts are the end all be all of sponsorship.

    screw him.

I don't remember how much it was a while ago. For my first pro fight.

Yeah a few hundred bucks is nothing vs a few thousand. I'm just bitter. As the good jew I am all negotiations for new deals will be heard with open ears.
