    Basically you have to tell it to them in their face that you do not appreciate their friendship anymore and that you want to end connections with them. You have to tell them otherwhise they'll never get it.

    depends on the reason for ending the friendship. Generally, long-term friendships end when each person drifts apart, and so no actual 'ending' is needed, as it ends on its own. If he wronged you, then confront him. A good friend would try to make it right, and no ending would be needed.
