I have been looking for a good fixed blade knife that I can carry with me this coming summer on my 2 week hiking trip to the Rockies and I think I have narrowed my selection down to 2 choices:

    Gerber LMF II Infantry
    http://www.gerbergear.com/product.php?model=1463

    and the

    SOG Seal Pup Elite
    http://sogknives.com/store/E37T.html

Right now I am leaning toward the seal pup due to it's lighter weight, shorter overall length, and steel type.

On the flip side the Gerber has the self sharpening sheath, hammer butt, and can be spear fashioned but is double the weight.

A side note is that I am only 5'8 and weigh about 143lbs so I have some small hands comparable to other people so I need to smaller sized grip which the SOG seems to have also.

Does anyone have any experience with these knives or can offer advice in general on these since this is my first "good" knife purchase. Also, if anyone has any comparable companies that are of the same type of design please let me know.

    Appreciate it.:)

A lot of people seem to like the LMF. It's built like a tank, but is on the heavy side.

Available here for $60, call ahead for a stock check, though:

Thanks for the info, I think I am going to get the Seal Pup Elite though after thinking about it. The lighter weight and more balanced design just feels like it will work better for me considering my hand size and so forth.

I own the SOG Seal Pup and wouldn't trade it for anything in the world. However, I'm biased because I ONLY buy SOG. From experience, they are absolutely wonderful knives and the only brand I would trust my life to.

I ordered the Seal Pup elite with the partially serrated edge today. Only thing I wish it that the Kydex sheath was available for this knife.

You can make your own for pretty cheap.

Congrats on a great purchase. What finish did you geton the blade? I always get the black TiNi. They say it helps to protect the blade but I also think it looks completely awesome. Unfortunately that last SOG I ordered (a flash II) came from a company that kinda screwed up the order and I got it with the regular silver finish. Still love it though!

    I got the black tiNi.

Now I think I may replace my old ass but unused Gerber multi-tool that was bought as a gift in 2000 with something else also.

My multitool is the SOG Powerlock. Absolutely fantastic. Purchase it immediately.
