So I'm not a huge knife aficionado, however, I've been looking for a reasonable "Just in case knife". My EDC is a Kershaw LEEK and a Kershaw Blur at work.

However, I located a Coldsteel Tanto Tanto II, got a great deal on it and was very happy, then I found a Master Tanto for a great deal and was impressed with it.

Just wonder what the knowledgeable guys think of Cold Steel and the San Mai steel...and better competitive knives...

    Why?

I prefer the japanese tanto style compared to the U.S. blade style. My blur has a tanto blade which I enjoy and has utility.

I find the japanese cut is much more durable though. The main attraction to this particular cold steel knife is the thickness of the tang...I just wonder about the steel quality.

Also what do you want to do with the blade?

Tips break after alot of use and the sweeping part of the blade is what will do alot of the cutting in a self defense situation. Tantos are only good for stabbing through stuff which it doesnt do all that well either because the tips break pretty easy. A decent dagger will do a better job at stabbing through stuff

I keep hearing of cold steel hate, but these two knives have me pretty impressed with quality.

Sturdy would be Cold Steel Kuri Machette, go to the knives for everyone thread there like $20.

Blade may not hold the best edge but in a SHTF situation your not gonna be carring about an edge all that much can it cut and rip shit open and chop shit down with out breaking?

    Yep

I EDC a Benchmade Griptillian. Used to EDC a Cold Steel Recon 1 Tanto. I loved that knife, held an edge like a fucking boss. It was the original model though. Cold Steel has since changed their blade material and the new sucks.

Sometimes I'll EDC my Ka-Bar too, but that's more for the lulz than anything else.

I EDC a Cold Steel Voyager Large Tanto, and am very satisfied with it. Very sturdy, locks like a vault, keeps a good edge. It's VG1 steel, not San Mai, but still.

    Second that.
