Interesting article, especially per Adapation 3, little known by may PTs. (I have the issue myself and a PT's mind was bottled by my lateral knee movement while running/single leg hopping.) A case study is outlined at the bottom below.

One of my professors who is a PT told me this. I share it with all runners I encounter that complain of knee pain

I'm always shocked at how much people neglect glute training, I always come across new studies and material on the relation between weak glutes and various injuries and issues.

I've also recently read how a weak gluteus medias can often be the main cause of Plantar Fasciitis in some people because of its role to align the femur, knee, and ankle.

    Fucking dot.

And weak/badly firing VMOs as well, which are a bitch for knee pain.

you want to develop glute activation by challenging the stability of the hip if you're going to properly address the issue. Commonly people with weak glute med will perform the lateral band walks by using accessory muscle groups, eg. with high TFL activity.

My advice would be to start with a very regressed form of single leg squat for instance.
