this is the forum for gay/bi/trans people, and yet it's called teh closet... so technically, you have to go back "in" the closet to post about being "out" of the closet. sorry, just a random thought i had.

...I've always liked the name. Very OT. And very Queer Theorist.

I'm not sure how well read you are on Queer Theory, but Dr. Sam Chambers (a California based professor of Queer Studies, currently resident at a Ohio university) writes extensively about what he calls the 'epistemology of the closet'. He theorizes that due to heteronormativity, whenever you have an environment where it is predominantly queer, we are creating a false sense of the closet.

In the heteronormative world that we currently live, Chambers argues, because we have to continuously come out every time that we meet someone new, any place where heteronormativity does not exist is, by definition, 'a closet'...

So yea, I've always liked the name... [/On Topic]

It's a big closet... with a disco ball and a lot of nice people hanging out, chatting...

Ain't no loneliness in this closet... No feeling like you're the only one and nobody understnads you...

    None of that...

We're a party closet... Like Karen Walker's closet in "Will & Grace"

    Who wants to play dress-up?

i understand what you mean. it's too bad that a closet, which is usually a dark, small enclosure, has become associated with homosexuality =/. but, as you say, your closet (at least here on ot) is filled with a lot of interesting stuff, and drastically bigger than most closets in general. i always assumed that for someone to be "in the closet" was for someone to be in denial of their true selves, but i suppose that is a heteronormative perception on my part. i suppose that it is very much in keeping with the spirit of the internet to turn something potentially negative (i.e. the idea of being "in the closet") and make it into a positive statement.

    thanks for the insight.

We are all about sharing random thoughts around here.

Aaaand thanks for noticing the whole other side of the coin ("reclaiming") that is in play with our use of the term here...
