RICHMOND, Texas -- A teenager was killed in a freak accident while lifting weights, the Fort Bend County Sheriff's Department announced Monday.

Deputies said Cameron Michael Shaub, 16, was lifting weights alone at his home when a 240-pound barbell fell on his throat on Friday.

Cameron's father found his son's lifeless 195-pound body on his weight bench.

"It's a terrible way to find your son," David Shaub said.

A preliminary autopsy showed Cameron died from asphyxiation due to compression of the larynx. He did not suffer a fractured or broken neck.

"I assume that probably the reason that he couldn't get it off was because it hit him right in the trachea and it just immediately cut off his oxygen supply," Shaub said.

Cameron played on Foster High School's varsity football team and worked out daily. Shaub said his son had been told to reduce the amount of weight he lifted while he was alone.

"It's just not worth it," Shaub said. "If you want to improve yourself, then you should be doing that with all the safeguards in place. That would be having a spotter."

Cameron's death has been a tough lesson for his teammates.

"You wish you had 50 like Cameron," Coach Mark Wiatrek said. "That's the one thing I'm going to do is to preach to them, 'Guys, just understand what can happen so be careful.'"

Shaub said he hopes to talk to Cameron's teammates about the dangers of weightlifting before football practice begins in August.

A visitation will be held Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church from 7 to 9 p.m. His funeral is set for Wednesday at 11 a.m.

Dump 240 off your trachea? :eek3:

This brings up a good point - if you have a rack at home, is that as good as a spotter? I assume so.....

I guess you're right. If you have clips on you're pretty much screwed. All you can do is go clip less and hope you can slide one side off in this instance.

unracked too much weight, arms held at a strange angle, weight comes down.
went to throw the weight into the rack, had a cheap rack, weight bounced out and fell.

doesnt take a lot to see how it could happen

if he was using clips, it was a stupid mistake and something that could've possibly been preventable IF it didn't drop (and it doesn't sound like it did).

I've never understood the point of clips on benching with less than 500 lbs, there's no bar bend to worry about

I have always been told if you are lifting alone not to use clips for this reason

I always bench alone, but I also always bench clip-less...

I've had to drop it once or twice, but only after it starts really crushing my sternum...

Exactly which bench form would land the weight on your throat?

    Decline maybe?

1 Wrong angle with your wrist or something and you're gonna be in trouble though. Haven't you seen those videos here of PL missing lifts? If you're going as heavy as you do I would be a lot more careful. It's a lot harder to toss it sideways after it falls out of your hands and bounces on your chest

I just used the PL guys as an example since they're strong. Even they can "miss" a lift and drop it or something

If you bench to right below your nipples and drive the weight back up over your face it may be really easy to drop it on your throat when fatigued.

Maybe it landed on his chest and rolled to his throat, and that's why his neck wasn't broken?

Yeah, both of those are good points....

Having it stuck to his chest and rolling to his throat must have been fucking terrible...

A guy from my old high school died from the same thing a couple years before i started going there...

I don't get how that shit falls on someones neck... When I bench the bar is over my lower pecs or shoulders at the highest, and when it's been too much I've always been able to roll it down my stomach rather than it falling on my neck.

Either way, sad story. I feel sorry for the family to have to go through that, especially since they're the ones who came home to find him like that.

Using a power rack would have saved him as a spotter, no?
