    Okay.

By the way, about half of the Jappish cars you can buy in the US are built in North America now. The engines are usually still made overseas, though, because the UAW has an annoying habit of sabotaging X% of the engines they make, to keep the rebuild guys busy.

    Honda's not organized.

They pay their guys better than the Big Three, and they build an outstanding product (including engines & trannies) here in Ohio. The Honda workers I've met are a loyal bunch for the most part.

Domestic brands could learn a few things.

The UAW targets automakers depending on their capacity to meet their demands. Toyota couldn't get any workers until they agreed to let the UAW organize them, which is why they've got plants in the South instead of up north -- that way they could avoid hiring any existing UAW members.

The only "American" car I would own is the Holden Monaro (current model Pontiac GTO). I've really tried owning and liking "domestics" but the build quality of most US based carmakers is pitiful at best.

I travel a lot and get to testdrive a lot of rental cars. Thanks, but no thanks. Give me a Hyundai over a ford/gm/chrysler any day of the week.

Rentals aren't really a fair way to judge anything. They're usually equipped with base motors, and lack the amenities of the higher trim levels. Also, they are "treated like rentals" by many of the clients.

American cars have come a long way, though there is still much room for improvement.

    As far as rentals go, it wasn't long ago when much of the rental fleet looked like this;

So, I think we've seen some improvement...

Compare base model to base model. The build quality of the Big 3 doesn't compare.

I am actually trying to convince my parents to buy a new Hyundai Sonata. Would be a great car for my mom. However, dad wants to get a new Taurus or Dodge Avenger.

Oh god, definitely get the Sonata over that shit.

Consider a Mazda6, though. Mazda makes good cars; nobody in my family has ever gotten less than 140k of reliable service from one of them.

For people on a limited budget they seem to work just fine.

Not everyone cares about having "baller status" on the road.

Mazda is Ford's Holden. They use the parts they think are good enough and they make the rest themselves. Ford owns a controlling stake in Mazda, but on the whole they're smart enough to leave them the fuck alone and let them do what they do so well, which is make really comfortable cars that also don't drive like Buicks.

I do believe Kia is a subsidiary of Hyundai, which I would then think it would follow that the quality of the two would be closely related.

As previously stated, Ford owns a controlling share of Mazda, but most of their cars are still made in Japan (my father's Miata was made in Hiroshima, as was my old 626), and they can pick/choose parts offered by Ford, but they are by no means obligated to use them.

Ford is at least smart enough to let Mazda do their thing the best way they know how.
