I watched a special on it on National Geographic.

Apperently getting the highest black belt rank in it is damn near impossible. There is this guy that is like 90 that has tried for the last 7 years and still hasn't gotten it. :hsugh: Poor guy.

2 kids came to my high school many years ago to put on a kendo demonstration for some asian culture night. Looked pretty cool, they shouted and whacked each other a bunch of times.

my friend is really into kendo

I don't think you should really view it as a method of self-defence though...I asked him about that and he said "if I don't have a sword, I'll use my fist"

if you swing your fist like you do with a sword, you'll end up with a pretty wacky punch that'll break your hand

I've done some sword stuff. It's real fun. Just like any martial art, if you're aggressive from the start and not too worried about getting hit, you'll be able to handle yourself in there. Kendo places usually make you get their pads, which is this full suit that can be hella expensive.
Iaido is the art of drawing the sword. So, cutting and shit from the draw. Doesn't help too much with a kendo stick.

kendo is fun I took some classes when I was little because my first judo instructor was also into kendo and aikido. Seems like most people that are involved with aikido end up taking kendo at some point or another

Jsut go. You will get schooled for awhile, but they you will start getting alittle better. And on the rare ocassion you will beat someone with alittle mroe expierence than you and you will feel great
