If I were buying new right now I wouldn't be looking at a d80....
But since I already own it and it gets me the results i want, i'm not gonna dump it.
what makes me disagree w/ him is where he saids "[FONT=Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif]If money matters, buy the almost identical D40".
I think he's doing this to help w/ ad revenue
Yeah, thats off. The version lower than the d80 would be the d60, not the d40...
Perhaps the d40x, but the d40 is a couple steps lower...
I agree with you completely. What I dont like about it is that it feels like he is saying the d80 is junk, when in fact it is quite a competent camera. You know this, I know this... but to the herds of mindless Rockwell following newbs out there... they wont know any better. That and it could hurt my resale value when I sell my d80 soon.
That bothered me too... but it wasn't unexpected. His love for the 18-200 is rivaled only by his love for the d40.
why couldn't the nga be a canon user?!
he's an idiot.
ken rockwell is god
he never replied to my PM on NikonCafe.
Dude! He's God. He probably too busy creating earthquakes, and dividing oceans to respond.
i have a d90
that was acab
and they took away my PM abilities:
yeah, i read that too a month or so ago.
D80's are going for like $400-500 =(
i got a D80 about 2 months b4 the 90 cameout.
well the d90 is still a few hundred more then the d80, currently i own the d40 and i know it is still capable. One thing i do like over the d40 that he mentions is the screen is better, and the histogram is more accurate according to ken, rather then just based on the green channel like on the d80. If anything i would just avoid the d60 the most and prefer to have the d40x even. the thing I like most about the d90 review is how it compares to the higher end cameras in nikons lineup. http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d90/sharpness-comparison.htm . If I was in the market today for a new DSLR i think the d90 would definately be my next camera.
ken is a douche but I agree with 3% of what he writes. That falls in the 3%.
ken rockwell rules.
im just curious to know why he added that addendum to the d80 review.
he didn't put that same addendum on his d40 review, or his 20d, 30d, 40d, or 5D reviews.
chuck norris worships ken rockwell
even where he saids "[FONT=Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif] If money matters, buy the almost identical D40"
That's him being a sensationalist so he gets discussed on forums like this one. But I'd suggest that most people who want to save money and get a d80 would be better off getting a d40 for various reasons but there are exceptions of course. There's still valid reasons to buy a d50/d70 but they don't apply to most. Ken's advice really is ok for a lot of people who read his advice. Pros and knowledgeable people don't really read it seeking advice...
The d40 is still a nice camera, I hate how he fails to mention a lack of AF motor for the older and cheaper prime lenses though. I guess that's because the 18-200 is the only lens that exists in his mind
