I got a kel tec sub 2000 9 mm glock 17 mag model. It's pretty nifty, a pistol caliber carbine that folds in half for easy storage. It takes the same mags as my pistol, for double win.

I got it to the range and all was well. I got about two mags through it, then the front sight broke. Yeah, the piece of plastic that served as a post just snapped and kept flying forward with every shot.

It seemed solid other than not, you know, being able to aim any more.

    Sigh.

If I had a spare glock frame, I'd do the mech tech.

But the sub2k is a nice cheap truck gun. Just... built cheap.

welcome to keltec. buy the brand another few times and you'll eventually learn.

Find me another collapsible 9 mm carbine that takes glock mags.

All the cool in the world is worthless if it doesn't run.

It took me a couple times to learn my lesson though too ;) The realization that a pistol caliber carbine is relatively useless didn't hurt either, especially one with a bad trigger, crappy sights, poor cheek weld, etc. Anyway ymmv, at least they pay for return shipping to the factory.

Relatively useless huh? Range, size, capacity, and more energy is useless? Sure it's not a real rifle, but it will easily fit in a pack.

And the comp'd return shipping is probably the only way they'd get significant business.

Exactly, re the nothing else like them part. Sometimes that's good for them, sometimes that's bad.

I'll probably fab a new sight post out of aluminum I have around. It's not like it was a piece of the chamber or action that failed under fire.

The only real plus I'll give pistol caliber carbines is the ability to hit easier with a stock. Past that its still firing a handgun round in a format that is way larger than a handgun. That extra bit of barrel is really worth squat for terminal ballistics.

What is useful to me in a gun may not be what you're looking for though.

    cheek weld is near-impossible

  11. Soy is 100% right here. At one point I did a rundown of the ballistics of pistol rounds fired through carbines, and the advantages are basically 0.

I searched and found it. I also bolded the main point. Once then bullet slows below its designed operating velocity window you're not going to get reliable expansion.

This is all evident. But you're going to be more accurate at medium range (say 50 yd) with a pistol round in a rifle, simply because you'll have better control and sighting.

    and I own one too

  15. If I'm using something the size of a rifle, it's going to be shooting a rifle round.

It's not the size of a rifle when it's folded up and strapped to your pack.

I didn't have much trouble with the cheek weld.

    ugh. fat face much?

  19. And it's not nearly as useful as a rifle either. :dunno:

Basically, the only thing the sub-2000 has going for it is that it is short when folded.
