Where did you find the cheap uppers/barrels? Thinking I might go that route if it's in my budget, rather than gunking up my main SBR upper

EDIT: and im not paying for an arfcom membership anymore. not worth it

if you do a search, it only searches thread titles. and limited to only recent posts, as well as not being able to search archives. among other things

I got mine locally. Lots of people 'upgrade' barrels to 1/9 or 1/7 and 1/12 barrels are generally cheaper and they work better for .22LR.

I picked up a complete YHM upper for $93 from Bright Flashlights.

That's the reason I built a dedicated .22 upper... keep my other two ARs clean.

I had an extra 14.5 barrel laying around after upgrading one of my other rifles ... Bushmaster 1/9 chrome lined HBAR. Already had a new upper receiver that I had picked up for another project. Basically just had to buy the free-float tube and a charging handle and drop the CMMG kit in. Since I had the parts my dedicated upper was next to nothing in cost.

Even if I had to buy a used barrel and find a cheap upper receiver, I think I'd still build one again.

Then of course I bought another lower and stock so my .22 conversion that already became a dedicated .22 upper is now a complete .22 AR. ARs are like a disease :noes:

I know true .22 uppers are 1/16 twist and people will try to find 1/12 AR barrels to use, but is there any real problem with using a 1/9 barrel?

Is there some requirement that it has to be a certain twist? It obviously isn't that twist if someone just drops a conversion kit into their existing AR, so why is there concern if it's a dedicated upper (even a mutt of mixed parts like mine)?

I don't notice any accuracy issues with my 1/9. Of course I'm only shooting at distances of 25-50 yards with a cheap red dot. I'm not on a bench, I'm not going for extreme accuracy, I'm shooting it like an AR should be shot... hitting a human sized target while on the move and practicing reloads. I'd try failure clearance drills, but my CMMG kit hasn't had a failure yet :wiggle:

I'm using 1/7 in my LMT upper and it's dead on at 25-40 yards.

clean it? i clean my rifles after every use my pistols on the other hand are a different story

  17. With a faster twist on a .22 you just lose some velocity. The bullet isn't going fast enough to tear itself apart, so the only real downside is the velocity loss.

Gas tubes can still get gunked up even with 223, especially when shooting blanks, tracers, or dirty ass ammo (read wolf) it usually happens at the bend in the gastube though, and with longer rifle length gas tubes
