I have an '02 WRX with 92,000 miles. Yesterday I test drove an '06 STI and it rocks. :hsugh:

I love my '02 but it needs work. Haven't had any scheduled manitenance since 21,000 miles, needs breaks, a new fog light housing, new tires, new windshield, new paint, and a couple other things I can't really think of right now. Things like the tune up I'm not skilled enough to do myself. Like I said, it has 92k miles. I know Subaru has great engines, but who knows what might start going wrong anytime soon.

I'm having a hard time deciding what to do. It would be much easier to trade it in for the STI, but more expensive in the long run. The payments will get a little higher. I also have various parts I would be selling seperately, which would pay for a couple monthly payments.

you deserve to kill yourself for not maintaining the car since 21k miles.

It just hasn't had major maintenance-- tune up, etc. I've be strict on basic maintenance.

Paint wise, there's nothing I can do. Detroit roads suck.

If you can afford the STi, go for it. But don't neglect it like you did your 02.

im in the same boat with an 04 sti.

i can trade in my wrx+mods and only have to pay another 6k for a BRAND NEW 04 that has sit in a garage all its life as part of a car collectors collection.

cost of ownership for an sti is more than a wrx.

    stock vs stock, yes, absolutely.

but I have a WRX with a turbo upgrade making 120 more hp at the wheels than stock and 123 more tq+ a lot more stuff on it.

It's about equal. Tuning is expensive.

I say you get an Evo, since it does everything the STi does, but better.

I love how you seemingly know about me and my experience.

I also love how you seem to think that experience=knowledge. I don't have to sail around the earth to know that it is round, other people have already down that, and documented it for others to read:

The STi has nicer gauges and other little things, but that's about it.

And makes the same amount of power as an Evo.

BTW--That half a liter extra is cheating by WRC standards. Which these cars are supposedly inspired by.

For the OP, obviously, if finances allow, go for the STi. It will be much more fun than the WRX you have now.

you forgot that for working on in any way shape or form the evo rapes the sti.

i had to take my WRX back to stock this weekend. I was originally planning to sell it and try and buy an sti either now or in a year while I mooch off my family's extra autos in the meantime.

After working on the wrx and cussing and spitting the whole time for about 8 hours just trying to pull off the damned turbo system, exhaust system and uppipe (why the hell does hte uppipe have to be such a bitch)

I am SERIOUSLY rethinking EVER owning another subaru EVER again.

Well since the OP hasn't done shit to his car since 21k miles, he probably doesn't care too much about ease of maintenance. :)

I think you really have to evaluate what you're looking for a car when you compare the wrx and sti. I own a wrx, and I think of the wrx as a quick compact car, while the sti is a full blown sports car. So what did you really like about the sti? Are you really going to use all that handling, or were you mainly impressed with the power? If you liked the power, consider the '06 wrx (has the 2.5L engine, much more torque) and go stage 2 with it...people are getting near sti power levels with that setup.

Do you do alot of commuting? Since you have 92k miles in 4 years I would assume so. Are you ready for the stiffer ride that the sti gives you? Sure it's fun to hit up the twisties in that car, but 95% of the time you'll be in traffic. Like I said before, an '06 with a stage 2 will give you some fun power but you'll still have a confortable ride for the commute.

You'll have to budget in new tires right away, you say you live in Detroit, those summer tires that come with the sti aren't gonna work in the detroit winters.

Regarding the paint, since Subaru paint chips just by looking at it funny, budget some money to get a clearbra installed on the front. From what I've read, it's a great investment, about $500. I wish I would have done it myself.

Don't forget increased insurance costs, increased maintenance cost (especially a brake job with those brembos), and gas mileage is around 15% worse.

Of course, if you want to give your current car some new life, do the required maintenance and try going with a new exhaust and engine management on it. That might be enough to hold you over for when the new Impreza comes in 2008.

    no joke.

Maintenance on subarus can be a little expensive due to the weird motor layout.

I want an STi or evo but I dunno if I won't be tempted to f' aroudn with it.
