Went one of my AR's today :( I'm still not entirely sure why, but the upper is toast, bolt carrier exploded, and destroyed my mag in the process. I'll post pics later when I get home.

    The particulars:

Bushy DCM, not very old, always maintained
Ammo: Lake City USGI new in box 01 manufacture.

While not usually as dramatic as you describe, it could very well have been using NATO spec ammo in a SAAMI spec chamber, yes.

yeah, being a bushmaster DCM, isn't it going to be chambered in 5.56 or .223 wylde? even RRA's DCMs are in .223 wylde.

I asked Bushmaster about this and they say the chambers are made for 5.56mm. I think it was just bad ammo. I have been hearing more bad stories about LC lately.
    Are you OK?
Do you plan to get a new receiver out of Bushmaster? Sometimes they or the ammo company will replace it.

A KB? Wow, I think that would put me off shooting for a while.

    ouch!

so let me understand this. putting milspec ammo in can blow the bolt carrier.

my barrel says 5.56 NATO 1/9 HBAR

so does that mean im ok to shoot milspec?

I think 1/7 is milspec :hs:

But 1/7 or 1/9 only refer to the rifling twist. If your barrel is marked 5.56 NATO then your chamber should be just fine with milspec ammo. It sounds like it was probably just a faulty case on that round.

even if you're firing 5.56 loaded to NATO pressures in a .223 chamber, you're hardly ever going to line things up just right to get a kaboom. but, on the off-chance that it happens, don't do it.

as stated, 1/7 or 1/9 twist has nothing to do with the chambering of the rifle. it's only the twist rate. bushmaster, on every one of their barrels, chambers in 5.56. they will handle NATO pressures. RRA makes .223 and .223 wylde. the latter will take 5.56 NATO.
