So the trainer at my gym had me add squats into my routine. My first day I just did the bar so that I could get my form correct while he watched, we did 3 sets and he said my form was good, to just keep doing them like that and add some weight next time.

The next time was last Wednesday and I only did the bar plus 20 lbs (65lbs total) 3 sets of 12 reps. I figured keeping the weight low would be safe until I really got the hang of things. Well, I managed to totally F my lower back up. It feels like a muscle strain. I have been taking advil and putting heat on it (which helps), but it is now Sunday and it only feels marginally better.

How long does it take to recover from something like this? I have been going to the gym every other day since the start of Feb and I am itching to go now, but I know I could end up hurting it even more.

    Any advice?

You might want to find a new trainer if he is telling you your form is fine and you injure yourself with 65 lbs

Well, I am only ~135 so I don't think it takes that much for me to hurt something at the moment. I am pretty sure that I screwed up my form and bent my back a bit. I was trying to rush through my workout that day (which is always a bad idea).

Well, I just sort of assumed it was the squats because it was the newest thing that I had added to my routine. I lifted on the same day though, but it was on the Smith machine because the benches were taken (and as I said, I needed to get out of there).

Is it possible to strain your back doing triceps? I had just upped my weight on that as well. It is really my right lower back, left side seems to be fine.

And yeah, im not sore.. I ran track for years so I know what that feels like.

    Nautilus Free Weight Smith Machine

I am pretty sure now that I pulled it from lifting. I have been upping my weights but not really working on my lower back muscles. I probably just tweaked it wrong and now this is the result.

You mean the power/squat rack was taken (not the benches) so you used the smith machine?

Ah, sorry - I did all my squats on the regular Squat rack.

I was trying to unsuccessfully convey that I used the smith machine for the first time to do benchpressing that same day. Though I would think that you would be even less susceptible to injury using the smith machine because it keeps you in correct form? I also upped the weight for my tricep extensions.

Like rebs said, are you sure you actually hurt your back? I know the first time I did squats my back was stiff as fuck.

Yeah its definitly injured. Every time I twist it, try to get out of my car , etc, i cringe in pain. Plus it practically gave way when I tried to bend over to pick something up the other day.

I get sore just like everyone else but never like this. It is a different kind of pain.

Ah well, I guess I will just see what happens with it. If it doesn't feel better by Tuesday or so I will go see a doctor about it.

Is the pain just local or does it radiate down your leg(s)?
