I haven't ran in several years. Started back on June 1st and have run one mile (not a lot, I know) every day except two. For the most part I have had zero pain but a few days ago my knees started hurting bad. My brother (he runs alot) told me to take a day or two off. I did and the first day back, no pain. But I ran tonight and th epain is back. Should I not run daily. Should I just run every otehr day??/

I'm running in my neighborhood on the street most of the time or at a small park with a paved path around it. I have some new ascis shoes and inserts a Dr. suggested to me a while back.

Is there any thing I can try to get through the pain??

I am considering either joining a local gym so I can use their ellitical or maybe getting a mountain bike. Both would be far less hard impact on my knees but both cost $$.

    Any suggestions?

Sounds like your knees are still adjusting to the sudden increase in activity. Take it a little slower by changing your pace every so often, and try running every other day. Swimming is a great alternative if you still want to get some cardio in every day.

exactly, start walking a little bit and get back in the groove, then slowly work up to it again. running in grass might be a little easier for you too, if you're not already

    thanks for the suggestions.

I might go today looking at some mountain bikes. As far as getting in shape goes, is mountain biking just as good as running?

Obviously you have to adjust your distance, but yes.

My thoughts exactly. I'm not sure what back jogging is, but it doesn't sound conventional and if it is hurting your knees you should probably stop.

Try running on softer surfaces like grass/trails or a track.

+1. Running on concrete is actually counter-productive. you get better cardiovascular health, but your joints take a beating.

Try doing warm ups for your knees to get the synovial fluids running. Hell, I dont know what it's called, but in boot camp we would bend over and place both hands on the knees. Then, we would do mini circles with our knees, switching from clockwise to counter-clockwise. It looks gay, but it gets the synovial fluid running.

1 - Get the correct shoes for your gait. Probably not a huge deal for your distances but it could help.

2 - If you are just starting back you shouldn't be running everyday. Cardio everyday is good, but mix it up. Get on a 3 day split of a jog, bicyle (stationary or regular) and elliptical or swimming or something.

3 - If it hurts, don't run through it. Let yourself heal.
