Im going to start christophers routine http://forums.offtopic.com/showthread.php?t=1574598

on Monday but have a few questions

I'm 20, 6 foot 185lbs, pretty flabby :o . I have never done any type of lifting so free weights are a little :noes: to me (ibpussy). Basically does anybody have any suggestions of good starting weights to get myself acclimated with proper form so it actually benefits me. Should I start on the Smith Machine or will that just be pointless?

Also, are Leg Presses bad b/c I have always heard that is the best excersise to build your legs.

Last question, would adding some ab work in the routine be too much or will that routine actually help me with everything??

    Thanks

don't actually begin the routine yet. go to the gym, learn where things are at, pratice your form and get it as good as you can with little to no weight. don't use the smith, stick to freeweights

    squatting > leg presses

throwing in ab exercises a few times a week isn't a bad thing. most recommend it so your core is stronger in the big lifts.

as far as the squatting/leg pressing goes

it might be true that LP does build your legs more... not sure

however, it is a fact that squatting will develop your entire body more

So you mean just work with the bar with no weights to get my form right?

    as a noob always remember:

    1.form > weight
    2.form > weight
    3.form > weight

    write that down ;)

and yeah, before doing deadlifts definitely do some other exercises for a while to strengthen your back!

form>weight that is so true I can't even tell you. I work as a personal trainer and I can't even begin to tell you how many people have horrible form and hurt themselves. No matter how much I try and correct people, especially members who are older then me, they NEVER listen.

If you are starting out using some Cybex equipement for that first week or two in addition to some free weights would be good. They just help keep your form locked in so you know what it should feel like when you do free weights. Just remember even if a weight is light, do a full range of motion in a slow and controlled manner and breath in while in the negative side of an exercise and exhale for muscle contractions. Ex-bench press, deep breath in on the way down towards your chest, and strong exhale pushing the weight back up. Laugh if you want, but aside from bad form, people don't breath either. Good luck and stick with it!

I never breath when doing sets of 3 or less. If I do I loose my arch and loose focus.
