just recieved a used hdd

    need help figuring out if its compatible with my computer. the hdd is a maxtor diamondmax 18, 80GB ata/133 hdd. the computer is a dell dimension 9100.

    the 9100 has 1 IDE and 4 SATA ports (I think)
    that maxtor drive is IDE.
    your dell is probably using the IDE for a CD drive.
    you can hook up that maxtor drive to the IDE cable along with the CD drive but that would suck. it will be slow if you use both at the same time.

    your other option is to buy an IDE to SATA adapter, and plug that drive to one of the SATA ports.

    using the IDE and CD on the same IDE controller will be fine. people did it for years before SATA came out with little to no issue. it isn't going to be your primary drive, i'm assuming, so an extra drive for holding data is fine. if you are burning a CD/DVD, just make sure to use the SATA drive as your source or temp space instead of the IDE so you aren't trying to read and write on the same bus.

    buy a pci controller or use it as an external drive and get an external enclosure with an IDE connector
