nothing much, just a few mags and 200 rounds of M855 :wavey:

I'm :hs: that it cost me nearly $150 when the same could have been had at this time last year for half that much :wtc:

What a coincidence, I too just got some rifle ammo from my UPS guy but he was none too happy with having to make multiple trips and hauling 60lbs each time...

What is meant by "steel penetrator?" Is it as simple as it sounds?

 damnit i shouldn't have asked.

  9. It's a steel core in the bullet that's designed to keep going and penetrate armor after the lead and copper jacket have deformed and broken apart.

The range I go to doesn't allow fmj ammo, I asked the range officer why and he said something about fmj having a steel penetrator. Its an outdoor range with dirt hills used for bullet stops, I still didn't see why it might be a problem. oh whale.

  11. :ugh: Not all fmj has a steel penetrator. Actually, the overwhelming majority of fmj ammo doesn't have a steel penetrator. That guy is nuts.

I thought so too, but for 10 bucks a day they let you shoot all you want and have outdoor pistol, rifle, and shotgun ranges. You can bring as many guns as you want and any ammo as long as its not fmj. Its hard to beat.

I only have access to the .223 load and it's out of stock right now.
    Win!
M855 and SS109 have the steel penetrator; even then, it's nowhere near as effective as a hardened steel or tungsten carbide penetrator of true AP ammo.

  15. If I had 1,000 rounds last year, and still have 800-900 rounds left this year, I'd be :wtc: much more than I'd be

:dunno: when i got the M855 i had about 1200 rounds of 55gr .223 that i shot up first, then moved to my case of M193 (which i still have about 600 rounds remaining).

figure i'd start at the cheapest and move towards the most expensive.

Yeah, the M855 we've shot through steel sorta works but the real AP stuff is waaay better.

I don't simply because of the no FMJ rule. I'm a member out at Austin Rifle Club in Manor. $100 a year for unlimited use.

I just checked out their website, that's something I might be interested in doing soon. How long have you been a member?

Coming up on two years. The membership requirements are real easy; You go to a range safety orientation where you learn the range rules and go out to one of the ranges and show that you handle firearms safely in a live fire exercise. Then after that you attend one general meeting the next week and get your badge.

There are currently 5 ranges on the property. There's a 25 and 50 yard pistol silhouette range, then there is an everything (except shotgun) short range, then there is a 100 and 200 yard rifle range, then a .22LR silhouette range, then another silhouette range that doubles as a skeet throw. It's a great facility and it's getting better with the addition of the new action pistol bays. I cannot help but express my eagerness to see them completed since my office (namely my father) designed them. It's going to be awesome to have those available because there isn't anything else like them in this part of central Texas.
