Two-thirds of Canadians think gun violence is a serious problem but just over half of us think guns should be banned outright, according to a poll released yesterday. The Angus Reid Strategies survey found that 76% of Canadians consider gun violence to be a "serious problem," 52% think a complete handgun ban is justified, and 55% think a ban would cut gun violence.
"I think what is interesting is that you have three-quarters of Canadians saying that gun violence is a serious problem in Canada, and despite that, you have a slim majority -- 52% -- who would support a complete ban," said Craig Worden, vice-president for the polling firm.
The poll suggests many Canadians aren't sure about an outright handgun ban because there's a belief that criminals don't really care if handguns are legal or illegal anyway, Worden said.
"So there is a clear gap between support for a ban and the perception that there is violence related to guns, and that appears to be related to the view that you can ban guns, but guns are going to find their way into the hands of criminals, regardless," Worden said.
Angus Reid wasn't commissioned or asked to conduct the poll, he said.
"We're verging on 120 polls since January and we do those entirely on our own," Worden said.
In the wake of Toronto's gun violence this summer and in 2005, both Premier Dalton McGuinty and Mayor David Miller have demanded the federal government ban handguns.
The online poll of 1,067 Canadian adults also found that 87% of Canadians think mandatory jail time for crimes committed with guns is warranted. A total of 82% think more action should be taken to stop gun smuggling from the U.S., and 73% agreed outreach programs are needed to steer youth away from guns and gangs.

Well there are at least some smart canadians out there :hsd:
