Christmas and wedding gift for the fiance, she is a Canon person and has a P&S Rebel already.

Went with the Canon Rebel XTi body only and the following lenses:
Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di LD
Canon Normal EF 50mm f/1.8 II

I just wanted to tell everyone thanks for advice, I went with the Tamron after reading here and doing some research.

Very nice choice. I prob. would've gone with a Nikon since Im a Nikon sackrider (D70s for me :wiggle:) but that's a nice set you're giving her. What would I have to do to get a D2Xs with a 70-200 f/2.8 VR from you?

Smart buy, although I would've gone with a used 20d perhaps...but women seem to like the rebel series feeling in their hand, "nice small and light" as they say.

    I have a 30D, tamron 28-75/2.8 and a canon 50/1.4

I'll end up replacing the tamron eventually, but I knew that going in. I am very pleased with it so far (>6mos), even though most days I'd rather just use the 50.

Woot! great choice on the tamron!

I just sold my old setup
Canon 300d + Canon 28-105 f/3.5-4.5 and the shitty kit lens.

I just got my XT and Tamron 17-50mm

I'm gonna have some fun and post some pics on the forum :big grin:

I just ordered mine yesterday. I picked up the XTi with the kit, the ef 50mm f/1.8 II, 2gb card, wireless remote, and a cheap diffuser for $999.82 shipped. This is my first foray into dslr's, I'm more of a video guy, but wanted a semi-decent camera just for fun. :hs:

You know what's weird? In the past few days, i've been using the thrifty 50 more than the tamron, i really like the 50! It takes really nice photos!

Just curious... Why get the 50 along with the 28-75? You're only gaining one stop with the 50 over the Tamron. Optically they're close enough that the average person wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the two.

    I got a 50/1.4 and a tamron 28-75/2.8 because I planned on keeping a 50 forever, but I figured I would eventually get rid of the 28-75.

I doubt it's the same situation for him getting the 50/1.8, but if the 50/1.8 is as sharp as my 1.4, it's far sharper at 50mm than the 28-75

$1,196 before rebates from BH Photo. I skipped the Dell deal going on because I doubt I would get the camera in time.

    2 reasons:

I plan on keeping the 50 forever and I read that it was a good lenses for the price so I figured why not.

I am completely new to this whole hobby, so I honestly feel more comfortable learning the camera with the 50 because of the cost more than the expensive Tamron.
