I got my first tattoo in November 2005. It's a cross design on my wrist....seen here (bad camera phone pic):

It healed fine with minimal scabbing.

I just got a tattoo on Friday on my upper back down the center. This tat has black fill-in whereas my first tat did not. I'm keeping the tat moisturized with fragrance-free lotion (Curel). However after moisturizing, it looks like the ink is rubbing/flaking off in a thin layer. Well it doesnt look like it, IT IS. I am able to rub some of the black off the tattoo. I have accumulated tons of little black balls that I've rubbed off my body because of this. Is this normal?

Here is a pic of the tat as of Sunday. Looks beautiful.

But now that the black ink seems like it is peeling off, it looks a little dull in some spots to me now. I can provide pics if needed.

    Thanks!

dont rub it, and when you apply the cream do it very gently

Yeah outside of moisturizing it, I dont touch/rub it otherwise. Maybe I'll just not moisturize it today and let it dry out.

I took a new pic just this morning. You can see the two areas that are clearly scabbing. This is the same area where I was bleeding like a hog when he was done wit hthe tat. But do you see the other areas where the ink looks a bit thin? Compared to the pic above that I took Sunday? So this is normal? I've decided to not moisturize it today...

Looks normal to me. You always lose the top layer, there's still plenty of ink under your skin. Keep it moisturized, it'll look dull for a little bit while it heals but it'll be fine.

you might want to go back and get the second character touched up though, looks like you rubbed at it a lot.

The layer of ink coming off is totally normal, it happened to both my tattoos (the one on my lower back and the one on my shoulder). Both are filled in like yours, and both did the peeling/slight scabbing thing. I used A&D ointment on both of mine, and they've both turned out great. Just try not to rub the tattoo, and keep whatever moisturizer you're using on it.

You're definitely gonna need a touch-up on both the kanjis.

let it heal fully ~ i had one on my ankle that i thought was going to look like shit when it healed - it healed completely fine, and it's black/filled in. 4 years later it still looks good. wait and see what happens, but also keep a touch up in mind.

yea it's kind of deceiving and doesnt look that neat when you look at it, but it looks exactly like the stencil, as the stencil was made with actual hand stroked calligraphy.

    thanks everyone
