So I purchased a 300mhz Rev. 1 B&W last year with hopes of using it somehow (for $20, I couldn't really say no). I swapped out the processor with a 450 G3, and put 512mb of memory in it. I finally got the heatsink from the other processor on there, with some arctic silver compound, and I'm going to leave it on and see if it locks up (never did when the heatsink wasn't on there as well).

It's so much quieter than my PC, and only sllghtly louder than my Mac Mini. Does anyone have a copy of non-computer-specfic OSX they would be willing to part with for cheap (on CDs even) :x:

I'm actually looking to use it as a web server (small site), which I could easily do in OS9.2 that I have on there. However, OSX recognizes NTFS drives like my PC has, and I am more familiar with OSX. I probably won't do anything else with the machine.

I have a copy of OSX on cd that i found somewhere. I even installed it on an original iMac a few months ago, so i know it works great!

It was a torrent that i found somewhere. If i can find it again, i'll get you a link.

Boot the G3 up in target mode and tether it to your Mini with a firewire cable. Run the 10.4 installer from the Mini and have it install to the G3's drive.

I did this all the time with my G4 iBook until I found a retail copy of 10.4 I could boot off of.

Seriously? I didn't think B&W power macs could do target mode. I will try this though.

So long as it has a firewire port I think it can.

awesome, but aren't you stuck at only ATA-33 though? yikes on running a computer without a heatsink

i always loved the easy open design of the b&w's. my friend has a quicksilver, and it's such a breeze to open it up if we need to

It always had a heatsink on it. The original CPU had a foam piece around the raised part on the processor where the heatsink contacted. This kept the heatsink level on the top of the chip. The 450mhz I got didn't have this, so I had to fanagle the heatsink to have it flat on the chip, and stay that way when it was closed up. It is still running great though.

If I use it as a web server, the ATA-33 won't be the bottleneck, it will be my basic cable modem service. If I use it as a home server, I can always get an Acard controller, and break the 40GB barrier.

I'm excited. I haven't had this thing on in months.

I just read on lowendmac that the B&W doesn't support target disk mode :(

I can figure something out though. The hard drive is only 6gb, so maybe OS X isn't the best idea until I get a controller card and put a bigger HD in there. I'm sure I have a spare DVD drive around once I upgrade the controller.

No pictures (at the moment, camera battery is discharged). I just purchased an Apple DVD drive for it on eBay.

I just made two new purchased on eBay.

    Apple 8x DVD drive

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=ADME:B:EOIBSAA:US:11&Item=220154130632

    And the really important one

    Sonnet ATA133 card

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=190157044878&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=009

I have at least one 80gb hard drive sitting around, and I think this computer will be a perfect candidate for OS X. I'm wondering if my Mac Mini's installer DVD will work (I'm hoping it is not computer specific).

that card is way more expensive than it should be. i bought one for my windows machine for under $10...however, this one will work with your G3 for sure, compatibility is what you pay for

i have the same dvd drive in my dad's office computer, works great

i stumbled upon this [link] :dunno:

You could've pulled the drive out and loaded into an ext. firewire kit. :)

wow, at my work, they have so many b&w g3's that they end up scrapping all the time because no one buys them. we just sell the 450 mhz, 512 MB, 20 Gb with a dvd drive for $20. haha let me know if any one wants one

true, but B&W G3s apparently don't suport target disk mode. Believe me, I wish I could have.
