I got a free G3, 500mhz, 256mb of ram imac. they were throwing them out so i took one. i just want to use it for word, internet and printing. i have a few questions though

    1) I have a Dell downstairs that uses a Lexmark x75 printer on windows XP. I have all my computers (including the imac) connected to a network. How can I set up my imac so it can share the printer over the network? i found some instructions on google but they didn't work.

    2) How do I set up file sharing between my iMac and the other windows xp comp on the network.

    3) i got sick of apple's mouse (because no right click or scroll wheel). i tried plugging in an extra microsoft mouse i had and the left click and scroll wheel worked. how can i get the right click to work?

    thanks!!!

    1) First find an OS X driver for that printer, and save it somewhere on your mac. In documents or something.

Share the printer as administrator on the XP machine that it is connected to. Then it will appear under printer setup, in the OS X machine's System Preference's, "Printer Setup" program. If it does not appear, then check what 'workgroup' your XP box is setup on (right click 'my computer, go to properties, then look at 'network identification and see what it is), and on the OS X box go to Applications->Utilities->Directory Access. Click the lock to make changes. Select SMB, select configure, and set the workgroup to whatever your OS X machine is. Or set them both to 'Workgroup'

Now the printer should appear in your printer setup, under network printers, when you go to add a printer. Select the driver you downloaded.

    Wa-zam, you're done.

    2) If you share someting from the OS X machine, the XP machine will see it when you explore the network. Its a little harder to share files from the XP machine to the OS X machine. You have to manually connect to the IP of the XP machine in finder. Look up the XP machine's IP by going to a dos prompt and typing "ipconfig" without quotes. In Finder, select "Go" at the top menu, then "Connect to server" or just hit open-apple/command K from finder. Enter in that server's IP, and the username and password when prompted.

    Wa zam, you're connected.

The mouse, I don't know... but you should go to 'Blue Apple at top left of screen'->system preferences->trackpad.

The printer showed up under the workgroup, but when I click on it, it asks for a user name and password. I type it in, but I get this message:

Unable to connect to server with the provided password and user name.
    Error: 256

I know for sure that I typed in the right info. What do I do now?

Control Click = Right Click on an Apple mouse.

You should be able to download a driver for the microsoft mouse.

    Configure it in System Preferences.

I use a Logitech wireless mouse.

ok this is really starting to piss me off. it is only accepting my user name and password when it feels like it. for example, now when i try to add a printer, i type in my info and it accepts it. but when i try to install the driver for my mouse, it doesn't accept it. when i try to use some of the utilities, it doesnt accept it. what the hell is going on? i know for sure im typing in the right info.

The user name and password for the printer are the ones off your XP machine. The user name and password for the rest of the stuff in OS X is your username and password for your OS X machine.

The mouse works fine except for the right click. THe left click and scroll wheel work.

How do I find out the user name and password on the Windows XP machine? I don't remember entering a password when I set it up.
