Just got a free processor + RAM, suggest what mobo/gpu to buy?

    Friend gave me the following

    AMD A64 X2 5400+ 2.8GHz
    Some GSkill 4GB ram PC6400 (4x1GB) LINK:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231098

    Can you guys suggest what kind of mobo and GPU to purchase?

    (haven't been keeping up with mobos and gpu and etc. sorry!!)

    I like my gigabyte m1-6s or whatever it is, its old, but it supports crazy amounts of ram. Stable as all hell, and cheap. I would suggest something with an AM2+ socket so if you wanted to go quad core, it would be more feasible.

    Oh, and there is going to be a slew of elitists telling you AMD sucks. Just fair warning.


    edit - m61p-s3. It was like 70 something bucks, DIRT cheap, and if you are looking for a low budget build, it rocks. Not for performance by any means, though.

    for mobo i'd suggest something with a amd 700 series chipset at least... many decent options out there.

    what video card you should buy depends on what you want it to do and how much money you want to spend.

    amd processor == fail... but free is free
    amd chipset == fucking aids. Don't do it.


    get a nforce CHEAP and call it a day. don't spend too much money on it... you got a free amd chip and that's the only reason I'm even saying to do it.

    850w psu
    8800ultra
    p180case
    custom wc

    -runs fine, plays w/e i want with no problem. it will be a fine low dollar build
