Hey I picked up my first slr yesterday. I got a Nikon D50. If anyone has any tips on where to start or guides I should look at let me know. Also, I want to do some nature and outdoor photography. What would a decent telephoto lens be? I don't have much money so what is the best to look for in the cheaper options?

I hope ya'll are kidding about Ken Rockwell...:ugh: Dude's a tool.

If you want a good telephoto lens, buy my 70-210. It's slow on AF, but the glass is good. And Ken Rockwell loves that lens! :o Yours for $130. I'll post pics tonight if you're interested. It'll come with a skylight & CP filters + the lens caps.

Rockwell is probably the #1 reason that Nikon is sold out of the not-as-good-as-he-claims-it-is 18-200 VR. He also claims the D80 sucks, but loves his D40.

Entertaining read, sure, but that's it.

I love it when he reviews lenses based on assumptions.

The following is his review of the 18-55 II kit lens included with the D40.
http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/18-55-ii.htm
"I haven't used this version."
Later he says...
"Optical performance is the same, if not better in the 18-55mm!"

Riiight...

www.nikonians.org is also the reference for nikon stuff.

and kenrockwell is not a tool. his review for the 18-200 is a little too enthousiastic for the pros, but it's a very, very good lens for everyone else. And Thom hogan makes better reviews.

To each their own...I just take his advice with a grain of salt. Especially when he doesn't actually review some of the lenses he posts about. And the whole donation thing at the end of each article irrates me.

Anyways, some pics, unmolested in CS2 other then a resize, from my 70-210 for the original poster if he's interested. I'd like to get rid of the lense, lol.

I'll look into this lens a bit tonight and tomorrow when I finish a paper and get back to you. I was thinking I wanted to get something to go out to at least 300mm but it looks like that will be out of my price range, unless anyone has any suggestions?

I don't have that high of standards but would like to do some nature photography.
