I'm 22 and never done anything with martial Arts. Wrestled for three years in highschool though.:hs:

Been following MMA for about a year now and I'm really excited about actually getting to train.:boink:

I read an article in this months issue of Grappling magazine, I think about Royler and his philosophy about belts. It's more about learning than competing, so that may be one reason people think Gracies give out belts like "candy". Someone may have the skillset to become a blue, but get smoked by a white from another school because that guy is just more gifted or talented. It doesn't mean the first guy doesnt deserve to be a blue. Just a different way to look at it.

    Pretty good article.

edit: it was by Kid Peligro and Rodrigo Gracie

I don't care too much about belt status...I just can't wait to start learning submission techniques and sparring with other people!

Yea, it may help a little.

I'd like to eventually take something for striking. What type of schools should I look for, just standard kick boxing? I heard TKD isn't all that great.

Muay Thai and/or Boxing... something with contact sparring. That's if your BJJ doesn't offer anything. I've seen many of the schools around here start to offer some sort of striking with their BJJ programs.

"The Evolution Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy offers classes in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Submission Grappling, and Vale-Tudo. Classes are offered four days per week."

That sounds like they do something. Probably not much but it's better than nothing.

I just found this place which is pretty close to me too

    http://www.griffonrawl-ohio.com/classes.php

they teach muay thai and mma fighting. maybe Ill do that one, because it has striking also. it also seems to train more for competitions.

That looks like a great place. Where I am at now has a coupel of guys that fight, but we (they) are at a disadvantage of having to drive to Indiana and/or Ohio to fight. I wish we were in an area to train with a whole team of fighters like that.
