The K1000 is the standard for manual SLR cameras. They are very solid and reliable. For $150 did it come with a lens?

yea it came with a 50mm lens...i guess for the price its not bad, although i think id want a lens that goes a little wide angle, to a little telephoto

No you don't. Or rather, not for the learning part. A fully manual SLR and a 50mm prime lens are the only thing you need to learn photography. Wait and see. The 50mm lens gives you sort of the same view as your eyes give you and the lack of a zoom will force you to learn to compose your photos.

Until you finish your class, don't buy anything camera-related except for film and maybe a tripod - but only if you absolutely need one.

you payed a lot for a regular k1000, but too late now.

i got my k1000 SE for ~130. difference is its rarer, brown leather, and split image focusing. pretty much the same though. great camera. unfourtanetly my lens ring was bent (the part where you screw on filters). i found a newer and very clean 50mm at the photo store for $30.

makes focusing easier. if you look in there is a circle in the middle and its split in half horizontally. if the image is not in focus you will see the line and/or the subject wont line up.

not needed, but makes it a little bit easier/quicker. still $150 for a rock solid full manual SLR can't be beat
