I just bought a Ruger 10/22 after searching through here and reading what everyone had to say on the subject. Now I have to wait 10 days before I can pick it up. I am planning on leaving it stock for a while. I want to learn how to shoot before upgrading it. That way I can better appreciate the differences between the stock and modified. The only thing that I want to get right away is optics. Do you guys know of a decent, and not overly expensive optic that would be good for a 10/22 and a newer shooter? I have done some shooting with friends, and rented guns from the range on a dozen or so occasions.

I was thinking of getting at least the poly buffer, but it looks like the extractor may be a good idea. Its more that I don't want to modify the internals or barrel yet. I want to get a feel for the stock gun.

    I am in California.

  3. What the fuck!?! A new shooter who actually wants to learn to shoot before they stick shit all over their gun? :mamoru:

    Congrats on the rifle. :wavey:

I know exactly what you mean! Prototyping parts for racecars meant I had a different car every time it was on the track. It's no fun having so much trouble getting something dialed in because something's been changed... AGAIN.

A 10/22 was my first gun. Mine's completely stock with the exception of a urethane bolt buffer and a cheapy scope on and off. I'm SO happy with it and have a blast shooting it. If you ever try benchrest stuff, you'll instantly appreciate why people do triggers though. :o

Congrats. What setup did you get (stock/barrel)?

I could not vote for either Obama or McCain. Social Liberalism, and Fiscal Conservatism are the central tenet's of being a Libertarian. I would have liked Ron Paul to be on the ballot, but I voted for Bob Barr.

I recommend starting with some nice peep sights, there are several to choose from.

Learn thee, the way of the rifle. Scope won't make you shoot any better.

Do you have any recommendations as to which would work best on the 10/22? And, if I go with peep sights, what distance should I shoot?
