I just purchased a Remington 870 12 gauge (18", 7 shot) at Big 5 over the weekend, and now I need to get ammo. I'm a shotgun n00b so I have no idea what type of shells to get. I was thinking of getting some low recoil shells to shoot at the range, but how do they perform in terms of home defense? What do you guys use, and what do you suggest for a guy new to shotguns?

Yes, synthetic. It was $300, or $275 after mail in rebate. I live in a fairly large home (4000sq ft) with 2 other people. I'm mainly gonna use the gun at an indoor range, and I don't think they allow anything hardcore there (so no slugs.)

2 3/4 shells with #4 shot. Have a few #00 buck shot shells in a sidesaddle or speed feed stock so you have some added penetration ability if necessary.

Every range I've been to only lets you shoot slugs in the range.

My friend has a 870, the fancy shit always jams it - the cheapo wal mart stuff works great though

For home defense nothing beats buckshot

It's gotta be target loads, low brass, probably 8 shot or so.
