The local "athletic club" has judo classes taught by a 5th Dan. Would this be a good teacher to learn from? Or should I look elsewhere? How much a month would be to much to pay? I just e-mailed the guy to see what he charges.

5th dan is quite knowledgable, this does not mean that he is a good teacher. go to a few classes, talk to the other students, see how they feel. as to how much you should pay, somewhere in the range of 20-50 a month i'd say. also depends on how many days a week classes are (1 day a week i wouldn't pay 50 a month for) however 6 classes a week would be worth it imo.

I'd hit it, but it really depends on what you want to learn.
If you're good on the mat with bjj skills, you'd want to learn from a judo guy with excellent takedowns and throws.

You gotta just sit in class and see how a regular class is structured. If the guy's a 5th dan, then he knows what he's doing, but it doesn't always mean that he can teach.

Plus, if he does a lot of Kata, you probably wont be too interested. Too many variables, you gotta see what his class is like, and ask some of his students and ask how much time he spends standing and how much he spends on the gound.

As for cost, I pay $25 to train with 4 2nd dan instructors (non profit).

Another thing you want to check out is the student/teacher ratio.
I'd rather get hands on training from a 1st dan instructor instead of having 15 guys clamoring for attention from a 5th dan instructor.

Got this back in an e-mail today:

Does this sound good? I'll probably check it out tomorrow since it's only 5 minutes down the road.

    sounds VERY good
    old judo = pre-olympic judo

which means a LOT of groundwork, maybe they'll pull out some leglocks on you as well. Shit that sounds like a good club to join, and the price is reasonable. I think you'll have a good time, make sure you try it out first and if you need to get a cheap (but kickass) judo gi, www.judo-bjj-dvd.com or let me know.

Good sport, but shit...... old judo = good judo!

Thanks for the help itr452. I'm hoping I get out of work in time tomorrow night for the class. If not it'll have to wait until Monday. Now I'm kind of excited haha
