So, I have some free time this month. I started taking some Judo classes. I like the takedowns [somewhat] but the Kesa Gatame on the ground I just do not like. After doing BJJ some of their ground stuff seems a little inefficient. I mean, who was it that decided that this is the best way to hold someone down? If they do escape they automatically have your back. Why not work on 100kilos or crossbody or knee on belly to mount?

I love hip tossing people though. What do you guys think?

There's a series of getting out of the kesa gatame, that's one set of moves I'll never forget because being stuck in a kesa gatame by a good judoka sucks major ass.

If you can hold Kesa Gatame for 25 seconds, you get the win.

    That's why they practice it.

Why do BJJ guys spend so much time on collar chokes?

Okay first and formost lets get first things first. Kesa Gatame is one hold out of seven (most of which are used in BJJ) Side control, north south, mount are all judo pins. I doubt you have had an awesome judoka on top of you with that hold, i personally don't like it but it is really effective non the less. And there is an arm/shoulder lock you can set up straight from there using your legs.

If you are having trouble holding that position, firstly your grip is most likely wrongish. Try grabbing your inner theigh of your inside leg with the arm that is overhookingthe head. Or you can converesely just underhook the arm. However the reason this hold is so popular is that you essentially land in it from heaps of throws, so its a pretty common hold in judo. You dont really land in mount or north south in too many throws.

Furthermore judo guys are used to people having there back and defending submissions from there, if they stall it long enough, you will get stood back on your feet.

Finally this is JUDO NOT BJJ! different rules. I have to put up with a lot of people who come to class and go 'but in bjj i would just do this' to which my response is 'if you want to do bjj, then go do bjj, this is a judo class'

    I wasn't kidding.

If a good judoka gets you in a tight kesa gatame its game over.

A good kesa is a great pin for judo rules.

It's not something that i'd use for BJJ.

Like i've said before, there are alot of arrogant people out there regarding judo.

btw, if you dont like the scalf hold, you can transfer to side control and if you hold that you can get the win.
