I'm graduating next year with a masters in chemistry and trying to figure out what to do with my degrees. I was talking to a friend who graduates this summer and he signed up for the navy. He made it sound pretty good. I guess he got a huge sign up bonus and got most or all of his student loans paid off. Sounds too good to be true to me....

So what would I expect if I sign up with a masters in chemistry? I heard they have lab/science jobs but what are the chances that I end up getting sent off?

This question is out of my league. Here's my crew chief answer:

The Air Force has scientists. :dunno:

Don't join the Navy. Air Force might be the only places with labs. Honestly you would be better off getting a federal job. I know I was looking on that USAjobs.com site at microbiologists/biochemistry jobs and there were some that worked with the Army & Air Force.. but obviously your a GS not active duty military.

Navy doesn't give huge sign on bonuses, he probably ~10k at most with a degree. And no way in hell would they just pay off his student loans right at sign in.

Either your friend is excited and exaggerating or his recruiter is lying to him to get him to join and he hasn't read the fine print.

For the Navy they either pay off your student loans after the first year of service (33.5% per year for 3 years) if you choose to get the Loan Repayment Program or you can get a $8,000 bonus for your degree. Not both.

Also note it only pays $65000 of your loans. I guess if you did an in-state public college you might be under that, but with a masters degree & depending where you went... that may or may not cover everything you owe.

I've looked into this a little more now. Emailed a recruiter and still no word back from them.

I have a question about pay. How long does it take to move up levels? And what or who decides when you do?

depends on branch for actual advancement time. pay is all the same you can google 2008 military base pay and see the chart. there are special pays beyond that like hazardous duty, imminent danger, flight, flight deck, sea pay, etc that add on to that depending on what you do.

Why would someone with a graduate degree even go enlisted, usually with that education you would go officer in the army, Im sure other branches may be the same way

My uncle and cousin were officers in the army and got out. They were tired of doing 1 year tours in iraq. They walked the streets with the enlisted. Saw too many people get killed.

BTW the Navy promotions are the fastest compared to all the other branches.

Actually, the Coast Guard is the fastest promoting service.

and it's all averages, there are rates in the navy that will take you 11 years to make 1st. there's rates that will take you 4-5 to make 1st.

same for the marines and all that.

True, I saw many Marines get out as E-3's in my occupation, yet saw others make E-5 in ~2

I'm wondering more about the promotions for officers. I have a BS in chemistry and finishing an MS in chem so I hope that would help out a little.

Right now I'm trying to figure out if there is any benefit to the navy over getting a job. I have to consider I could probably be making 40-50k right out of school. That’s a pretty conservative estimate too.

40-50k? I think that's very conservative, I think you'd be making twice that if you work for a civilian company (at least in California). Perhaps I'm just being too optimistic. I hope you get to put that chemistry knowledge into good use.
