I'm planning on enlisting late this year in the Army. I've got pretty much no knowledge on weapons or guns whatsoever, and would like to become at least somewhat handy with a gun/rifle before I go into BT.

    Anyone with any links/advice/etc.?

    I'm in CA.

edit: and purchasing a weapon at this point isn't a financial possibility.

21 years old, so that shouldn't be a problem. anyone have a link to places to shoot in the los angeles area, preferably that have the AR-15?

thanks, by the way... the way i figure it, i get so much being in this country that those in other countries don't... i feel it's time to give back.

yes, become familiar with the AR platform, and how to dis- and reassemble it, clean it, and fire it. of course, many times, the best shooters are the ones who aren't familiar with firearms. they haven't had time to develop bad habits and high expectations. that's why women often do well in qualifying. of course, combat marksmanship and qualifying are two totally different beasts. if you take up a match position in the field, you'll die. i'd say in general, get used to peep sights.

This thread confuses me. I thought you were in the Air Force?

During Army BRM (Basic Rifle Marksmenship) they start you from scratch. They also note that anyone with rifle experience is at a disadvantage due to probably learning bad habits and they also will be much harder on anyone who admits rifle experience.

The one rule that got me through basic is to lay low. Avoid exceling, avoid fucking up, just stay in the middle of the pack. After that you can start the hard work and get on the fast track.
