i sold my xd40 sc and picked up a g17. I carry my 1911 more than the SC and needed something for IDPA.

    First impression
-the glock feels cheaper than the XD did.the tiny mag release and slide release buttons suck ass. The ones on the XD were alot better. Grip feels about the same, doesnt come with holster or mag holder like the XD does.

what do i need to make this gun decent?
    -extended mag/slide release
-plug for hole in the grip
    -grip tape
    -metal guide rod
    -trigger

When I got my glock I noticed the same thing. But so far I have no complaints.

Definitely get an extended mag release and extended slide stop. I got mine from www.glock-doc.com . Rob V will do you right.

I contemplated on grip tape, the sand texture, but haven't committed yet.

the xd is in a diff class for IDPA, and i dont want to spend 1200+ on a 9mm 1911. Its just from the way everyone talks about how they are so much better than the XD i figured it would have been a nicer gun

I own 4 glocks and 2 xd's and shoot them all in USPSA and IDPA, they are definitely different beasts. The grip angle is probably the most extreme distance in the spectrum. going from a Glock angle to a 1911 angle (which the XD is) is about as hard of a transition is as shooting a revolver.

If you are wanting to try IDPA, you have to watch what you upgrade the glock with, as certain things will get you bumped out of SSP and rite back to ESP where you would have been with your XD.

Stuff like an extended mag release is a no no in SSP "unless" it's a genuine glock OEM part. You will have to also stick with a Glock OEM side release.

I shoot my Glock 17 in SSP, here's what I would suggest:

fiber optic front sight (your not even in the race without one.)
    Lone Wolf Disconnect
    3M grip tape
Uncle Mikes paddle holster (new version)
blade Tech dual mag pouch w/ teklok
Good gun belt if you don't already have one
Range membership and tons of bullets.

next best thing you can do is just shoot the shit out of it.

i have decal grips, metal captured guide rod, slug plug, and (-) connector. I did have the overtravel stop but I got rid of that.

who cares that the glock doesn't come with a mag pouch and shitty holster? The ones that come with the XD are worthless, anyway.

don't mess with the gun. Change the sights and leave it be. You shouldn't be able to reach the mag release without changing your grip, else you'll start dropping magazines in stressful situations.

I observed this exact thing happening last weekend during the Tactical Response class. Guy had a G17, decided to add an extended mag release. Kept having all sorts of problems with the gun, was the same story of "well, it's never done THAT before". Put the stock mag release back in, and it worked as it was supposed to.

Just leave the damn thing alone.

I traded mine in for my 19 a few years ago and wish terribly that I saved up, kept it, and just bought a 19 as well.

Like everything else in life, everything is better just a few inches longer.

If you're ever going to potentially have to shoot someone with the gun, xs big dots

if you're using it as a range toy, whatever target sights you so desire.

Yeah it is, but it really helps in a stressful situation. Which is what it was designed for.

It's designed to work for you when someone's shooting back. Trying using it while shooting at multiple targets on the move. Suddenly it all makes sense and you don't think it's too big.

If you're going to stand at the firing line, and shoot at paper, yes, it's huge. If you're going to be shooting on the move/under stressful circumstances, you'll appreciate how very easy it is to find the front sight.

Plenty of people that have used them in defensive situations say they're amazed how small that sight gets when you need it.
