I know it's all about personal opinion, but you're SO WRONG

    /me slaps

    :p

The thing was a great film. I remember watching it on TV when I was about 15 and my sister was hiding behind the sofa (she was 11) :big grin: There are a lot of things in the film that could be done slightly better, but I wouldn't for a moment, suggest that Hollywood rui..I mean re-make it.

Did you see it post-1982 with Kurt Russell and Wilford Brimley?
If so, then you saw the only remake ever that is a perfect movie. :big grin:

If you're talking about the 1951 movie with James Arness as the monster
    [IMG]
then I disagree with you. It's good, but the remake was way better.

What're some of John Carpenter's other great sci-fi flicks?

Didn't they release a PS2/XBOX video game based on that movie a couple of months ago?

Great? Well, that's hard to say. He's sort of hit & miss. For every movie like The Thing, he makes a Halloween III: Season of the Witch. :mamoru: But that's what I like about him: He's not afraid to take chances and try new things. And even his misses have a certain charm.

    But...

Escape From New York is classic. So is They Live (I'm here to kick ass and chew bubblegum! And I'm out of bubblegum!).

And I know it's not exactly sci-fi, but ol' Jack Burton says you can't forget to include Big Trouble In Little China in any great John Carpenter movei list. :coold:

Couple years ago, actually. I have the PC version. It's pretty much an interactive sequel to the movie. You're part of a military rescue team investigating what happened at Outpost 31. :bigthumb:

That's probably one of the ONLY Carpenter movies I have on DVD.

Halloween III was on Sci-fi like a week ago, and since I hadn't seen it in a long time, I decided to watch it. I couldn't believe how cheesy that movie really was! It was pretty damn terrible.

They Live was an awesome movie. I'm gonna have to pick up a copy and watch it again, because it's been a while since I've seen it.

Love that movie. The Three Storms are such bad asses. Did anybody else think that Thunder looked like a Garbage Pail Kid right before he exploded??

I know. Laser halloween masks that fill your head with bugs, and a robot. Can't miss with that one! I read that he intended for the Halloween series (starting with 3) to be a serial of scary ideas, instead of a bunch of slasher films. It was a good concept, but since the first one bombed, they scrapped it and went back to the formula that worked. :(

:big grin: Great movie. They show it on sci-fi and AMC every once in a while.

 yeah, exactly. And every time I play mortal kombat, I don't see Raiden. I see Lightning. :bigthumb:

    Nothing that I'm aware of...

We can only wish. I'd like to see another Jack Burton movie. Or Escape from New Jersey. :mamoru:

But the Thing video game that came out a couple years ago is supposed to be the sequel to The Thing. You play the leader of a specal ops team going into Antarctica to figure out what happened at Outpost 31. :coold:

He does have 2 things listed as "in production" on IMDB:

Halloween 9, which he's not involved in (he gets a writing credit because it's based on his characters), and Assault On Precinct 13, which he wrote a screenplay for. But Kurt Russell isn't in it, and Ja Rule is. :wtc:

    Both listed for 2005.

The Thing, while a wicked sci-fi/horror movie... was not the best ever. Stomach of teeth wins over most things in life though.

I'm suprised this hasn't been mentioned before, but I've heard Event Horizon was a great sci-fi/horror flick.

    What do you guys think?

I honestly think that movie was a huge letdown. The first half was awesome - suspense, creepy atmosphere, great writing, great buildup...

Then the 2nd half is just like every cliche-ridden slasher movie.

It's worth seeing once, but not great.

Definitely one of the better one's. Story, effects, actors...and ending.

SO, who do you think was the alien in the end when they were sitting out in the snow?

You had to start this, didn't you?

I have no clue at all, but to be honest, I think neither one. If one of them is definitely an alien, there are good arguments for both sides. MacReady was in the shack with Blair and Nauls, who were both taken. But then Childs disappeared, and who knows what might have happened to him.

I think Mac was clean though, if for no other reason than the fact that he's the Point-Of-View character - we see everything through his eyes. (There's also the fact that he pops up in the video game, which is the official sequel). But I like to think Childs is just too damn mean to be taken.

At least you didn't ask whether Norris or Palmer got taken first. :mamoru:

Hadn't thought about that, I haven't seen the movie in a while. Never have seen the game, I'll have to check that out. Is it any good?

It's not as spectacular as the movie, but it's enjoyable and very creepy. I had chills about half the time I was playing it. You're a special forces operative coming to investigate what happened and why contact was lost with Outpost 31.
