The longest I've ever ran. I'm going to train for the PFChangs half marathon, I've always wanted to be able to run a marathon. Any of you cardio brolies have any advice on how best to prep for one? I'm stilll around 220lbs so I carry a lot of weigh around when I'm running. Trying to cut to around 200 with >10% bodyfat.

I have a very similar goal.

    Right now I am ~ 215-220 and 12%.

I want to start running and do a 5K and 10K this summer at 200lbs and 8-9%.

Good luck man... Hopefully we both get there :bigthumb:

Well, from my experience running, I could just run all day, broken into 5-10km runs. Do a 5-10km run, take a break for an hour if you want, get some carbs/sodium in you, then repeat.
I have since then stop running since I'm trying to gain weight, as I was 6'0 and 120 lbs. Currently at 150 lbs(goal, 180 lbs), but I'm sure if I starting running again id be back to 120 within a month.
This is where I have to ask a question, me being an ectomorph, I could never understand... "over-weight" people, that weren't happy being over weight. I don't understand how that can't just run all day. I don't mean to be rude, and I know I have no idea how it is to have a slow metabolism, but.. what exactly stops you from just running all day? Yeah your cardiovascular isn't going to be high, but then what stops you from running the max distance you can, stop, walk it off till you catch your breath, run... repeat. Even without dieting, doing that'll burn you 8000 calories a day. Your muscles might hurt for first couple days but... again, just walk if you can't run.

There's no slow metabolism for 98% of the population. There are just lazy people.

    .

Especially since you're here in the Phoenix area. Go to Runner's Den. Best damn shoe shop anywhere. The guys there are awesome; when I went, I walked like 10 paces toward and away from the dudes and from that 10 second walk they told me like 15 minutes of info about my feet (shape and size), legs, walking style, support needs, recommended shoes, etc etc etc. They don't try to upsell you either. Good stuff.

So it is true that if you plan to run you need to buy really good shoes?

I was just gonna pick up the cheapest new balances and nike's I could find that were running shoes. Bad idea?

    It's also a mental game.

You will thank us later for doing this. Depending on how serious you get the amount of injuries you can prevent by dropping 100 to 150 on a solid pair of shoes to last 300-500 miles is WORTH EVERY PENNY!

my only advice is to add distance slowly. Even if you're cardio improves quickly and you aren't getting gassed your joints take time to get used to distance. And being 220, they're going to take a pounding.

I honestly figured that for shorter runs (2-5 miles) a decent running shoe that is comfortable would be sufficient. Is it really necessary to go to a specialty running shoe store and get something uber specific?

usually when you buy something expensiev thats tailored to a specific idea/use its better then buying the low end version of it.

more expensive shoes ive bought tend to be alot more comfortable, durable and just generally better made.

    +11ty for the good shoes.

Here's a real simple simple training schedule. I followed something similar to do my first full marathon except I dropped the Wednesday run and rode a bike instead.

    Week Sun
    1 2 0 2 0 2 0 3
    2 2 0 2 0 2 0 3
    3 2 0 3 0 2 0 4
    4 2 0 3 0 3 0 5
    5 2 0 3 0 3 0 5
    6 3 0 4 0 4 0 6
    7 3 0 4 3 4 0 6
    8 3 0 5 3 4 0 7
    9 3 0 5 3 4 0 8
    10 3 0 6 3 4 0 9
    11 3 0 6 3 5 0 10
    12 3 0 6 4 6 0 11
    13 3 0 6 4 6 0 12
    14 3 0 4 3 5 0 8
    15 0 5 4 3 0 2 0
    16 Race

I can't set up a table for shit but you get the idea...
