VINELAND An off-duty state trooper was taken to Cooper University Hospital in Camden on Thursday night after accidentally shooting himself in the hand. The trooper, whose name was not released, was cleaning a gun at home when it fired, said Sgt. Stephen Jones, a state police spokesman. He said the trooper is stationed on the Atlantic City Expressway.

The injury was not life-threatening, Jones said. Additional information about the incident was not available.

I don't know. I don't pick up a gun without checking the chamber it first. Even if I have it sitting in my gun cabinet, which I don't store loaded firearms in. People just need to get the routine chiseled into their thought process when they pick up a firearm.

I'd say a lot of these are from people improperly disassembling a glock by putting their hand in front of the barrel. While they should be checking to make sure the chamber is empty, they should definitely not have their hand in front of the barrel when pulling the trigger.

Every time you pick up a gun, how hard is it to check if it's loaded? it takes all of 1 second to drop the mag and pull the slide back.

I don't leave guns unloaded, for multiple reasons, just one of them being that I can always assume it is loaded and ready to fire.

Effectively anytime I pick up a gun I have to check the chamber status as well. And, well, unloaded guns are worthless.

"was cleaning a gun at home when it fired"

Way to make it sound like the gun's fault.

Easy to assume every gun is loaded when nearly every gun I own IS loaded.

These people can't all actually be cleaning them. They just don't want to say the were fucking around being a retard and shot themselves.

I do find the theory that someone posted where most "cleaning accidents" were in fact suicide attempts the most plausible .
