I'd buy through a local tranny shop, or have them rebuild what he has.

Chrysler trannies suck, get it built STRONGER

First thing on a Chrysler/Jeep vehicle, do a full trans flush & refill with a genuine Mopar filter and ATF +3 or +4 fluid. If it still acts up, then you move onto diagnosing whether the transmission need to be rebuild or if it just needs a sensor/solenoid pack/etc. In my experience, Chrysler isn't the best tranny maker out there, but A LOT of problems will originate from bad/incorrect fluid, a filter and case of ATF is about $50, a helluva lot cheaper than a tranny you may not need.

Most of the issues on my dad's Chrysler transmissions have been sensor failures. The mechanical components hold up a good long time.

he checked the fluid and it was pitch black and loaded with metal. New tranny is on the way. he decided he'd rather replace it now while he has the funds than wait a year or two and have it shit on him when he can't get a free install. Thanks for the help.

Damn. That shit got roasted good. Sounds like it had been slipping for a while, or else the bearings were shot.

seems kinda fishy if you can't pick it up locally. They are probably doing something weird and then you can't bitch at them in person since all they do is ship it out.
