My dad's 94 Grand Cherokee is having a problem and I'm not sure what it is... Basically whenever he makes a sharp turn (steering wheel locked to one side or the other) the car shakes. A lot. He went to a mechanic and they told him it's his differential... but I've heard of a similiar problem with 3000GT VR-4s and that it's a suspension part and nothing driveline related.

    What's the deal?

If its binding in sharp turns like in a parking lot, its most likely your viscous coupling (VC). Its what gives you full time 4 wheel drive. Replacement is about a grand (no pun intended)

    Hmmm... So not suspension related?

They wanted $400 for the part and $800 for installation which seems rediculous.

If you have the 249 Tcase then it is most definately the VC.

My ZJ does it too. But I'm going to replace the transfer case and CVs in the front, so I'm going to drive it until one or the other explodes :o

The only thing it will do is accelerate wear of the transfer case, as well as wear the front tires faster than normal since the tires bind at sharp angles.

Does the 4 wheel drive shifter look like this:

    AWD
    N
    4LO

    or like this:

    2WD
    4PT
    4FT
    N
    4LO

The top is a 249 with a VC, the bottom is a 242.

Well, first of all, is it a V8? Also, when you look at the transfer case, what do the options say? The 249 transfer case only has 3 options. 4 wheel drive all time, neutral, and 4 wheel drive high. If he has more options than that, it's not a 249.

I'm swapping my case out with a 242 as soon as I can find one.

    :hs:

Then I'm going to do a burnout with my 2WD just because I can :o

Take the front drive shaft out and you can do one.

Oh wait...you'd smoke the VC for sure then. :o

Mine's been broken for 10k+ miles. It's not like your ZJ will explode or anything. It's actually cheaper/better to just buy a whole new case and swap it.

By the way.. for those of you who are looking for recovery gear... I found a damn good place to buy it. 2 inch x 30 foot strap for 35 bones!

It was between that strap and this rope. The rope was another 26 bucks for a 30 footer, and the strap looked like it was pretty good quality. Can't really go wrong for 35 bucks anyway.

Do you like it? I'm thinking 30 feet should be enough... the one I have now is 20 and wasn't long enough the last time I really needed it. Looks like a high quality strap. The last one I got I paid like 40 for, and it was just a cheap ass one from Home Depot. Some rednecks hooked it up and I ripped the eyelets out of it so it's pretty much useless now. I just need something fairly long and good and tough. My ZJ weighs probably close to 5000 pounds now with all the suspension, big ass tires, oversized speakers, and all the garbage I routinely carry around. I wanna take it to a truck scale to find out for sure one of these days. I'm probably over Max GVW :o

Well it's not like it doesn't turn, it just bumps a lot. I don't know how to explain it... it's kinda like when you're turning all the way it's as if you're on a bumpy dirt road.

My dad's is doing something similiar. His remotes don't work, but sometimes when he unlocks the driver side door with the key the remote will go off and he then has to either unlock the hatch or passenger side door. :dunno:

I like it. Only had to use it once, but it didn't break. :dunno:

Oh my friend did use it once to climb down a hill. Worked good for that too. :big grin:

How difficult is it to fix on your own? I don't have air tools.

You have an adapter for trailer lights?

I know in my dad's old ZJ that thing would go off whenever he had trailer lights connected. :sad2:
