Thinking about getting one. I need something reliable.
Try and get like a 99-01
Ford 4.0 > Jeeps 4.0
ford's 4.0 is shit
ford's 4.9 I6 is damn reliable
jeep 4.0's will last at least 250,000 miles with only changing the oil
the engine will outlast the body of the jeep
It was a joke.
this is true
they dont get good mileage though
92 5spd bought new, 240,000 miles
98 aw4 bought 6mos ago 120,000 miles
hahahaha at people thinking I was serious
i want a cherokee sport... but they don't make them any more
I had a 1997 Cherokee, brand new. It was the biggest lemon I ever owned. I think it just quit about 4 times. I was lucky I wasn't out wheeling at the time. Shorts, computer issues, leaking gas tank...I hope they got better eventually.
my 92 bought new....currently 240,000 miles
clutch(when slave cyl went)
half dozen axle/tc seals
4 shifter knobs
2 rear hatch wiper motors
2 brake jobs
patched floor over cat convertor
then the normal plugs, wires, tires etc....
tho the plugs have over 120,000 miles on them now...mileage hasnt dropped
My friend Hydrolocked his tho.
I have a 99 that has been through a transmission, front shocks, front axles, and front wheel bearings.
It has 110k on it now, and it's fine. I wouldn't consider it a piece of shit, and I would still recommend it if you need an SUV. The WJ body doesn't fall apart like the old one either.
So you had taken it wheeling before, and you're suprised that it broke?
I have a 98' cherokee sport. bought it in 2000, and have never had any problems with it, still runs and looks great.
i have a 99 with 118,000 miles, the only thing i've replaced that wasnt basic maintence is the radiator. About 2000 miles ago.
Lets see.. when i had my 92'.. It had 75k - 120k miles while I had it.
Never replaced anything on the engine. Minor brake issues. Blew a U Joint on the drive shaft to bits (just drove it in 4wd like a fwd car).
When i sold it it began to burn about 1/4 oil every oil change. Nothing significant.
Honstly unless you want to take it offroad. Don't buy one.
No, most of the issues happened before I did much wheeling at all. And I'm not talking about anything heavy duty...some beach work at most at that point. Nothing broke, mostly computer and electrical issues, except the leak in the gas tank that started at 2000 miles, and the a/c quit twice I think. I did go out on the beach one time, no big deal, and it died on the way into town due to a short. Towed it to the nearest dealership, took a week to fix, had to get rides back to get the car...what a pain.
My 96 just hit 160k. Love the damn thing.
My roommate has one with 160+k miles on it. It's a 99. He barely maintains it and I've driven it. Still drives great and no issues that I know of.
TX XJ's in the house!
