I have some nice jeans that are too big for me now but I'd still like to keep them...

is it possible to go to a tailor and get them reduced at the waist? Or is that a really stupid question?

Yes, it is possible, I've had it done myself. Make sure you pick a very good tailor, and if necessary, bring a pair of jeans that you bought recently which fits you perfectly and tell the tailor to make the fit roughly similar. If it's a lot, it might have to be recut, which will often cost quite a bit... so expect to spend a good $50 on a substantial tailoring of jeans...
